ill try keep this brief, but my gfs brother is looking to buy a new road bike
- budget <£4000
- full carbon
- no second hand bikes/chinese express
- no disc brakes
Because i'm not up to speed on road bike stuff i just advised general points e.g. definitely get a bikefit beforehand, do you want 1st/2nd hand,
he's open to building from individual parts but I guess its more cost effective to buy off the peg as a full package?
He was quite interested in specialised tarmac pro race? Yay/nay?
I thought you should expect dura ace at this price point, but he agreed there's not a great difference in performance anyway - budget <£4000

With that spec, it sounds like a race bike. If he is racing and is planning to spend that much I'd hope he already has some ideas of his own.
I'd get a £1k bike first, sort out the fit and skills, invest later.

Yeah I can see why you'd say that.
Whilst he's definitely not racing just a weekend ride type of guy. But he's using the same panasonic bike for years which hasn't given him any problems with fit (i'd still get a bike fit if spending that much, to get all the little bits stem seatpost handlebars cleats etc dialled in) just getting a bit long in the tooth now.
You know when someone has a hobby for years and decides to invest in something they enjoy. There's definitely an argument there to cut the budget down I agree, but i'm not going to go telling him that haha

When I got my road bike I knew fuck all about road bikes, so the way I did it was to go to Bespoke Cycling in Farringdon, have them give me a bike fit, then tell me what they recommended from their own stock based on my fit and budget. Then I bought one of the bikes they recommended from them, and had them do the final adjustments. Totally hassle-free and I'm still very happy with the bike and the general experience. If he's in London then I would totally recommend he do that, even down to using the same shop, tbh.

The first place I recommended was bespoke funnily enough! Have only been for a £100 "intro bikefit" ages ago but they really impressed me.
Thought that should be the sort of company with his budget/style of riding. He's in hampshire but I reckon he'll come up here for it.

£4k question needs to be asked in road bikes thread.
Canyon sale is on. -

I may possibly have a spare left one - I will check when I get home. I lost the same part and just stuck a (M5?) flange screw through there with a nyloc flange nut and have never worried about it since.

It's popular with hippies.
I tried it once, it's quite fun trying to balance and walk across one. -

That handjob from @mdcc_tester has made my day.

Yeah, I've had them go and replaced with a bolt before, but I'm out of ones that'll fit.
Thanks for looking. I'd rather pay a bit and have a neat replacement, then watch the little bugger like a hawk.

It's hard. And because the law is you have to do it in a park you will have to fall off lots in front of people, all of whom think you are a dick.
If you are looking for a hippy-hobby go indoor climbing, where you'll only be judged by other hippies.

I see them strung up between trees on boulevards around my neighbourhood, then again I live in the Granola Belt.

Where in the UK would I get decals like this done:
I mean, I would like to make my own design, but who makes multicolor decals for bikes in good quality? What are those types of decals even called. Right now I have single color vinyl stickers...
EDIT: Or something like this foil

Oh I know that much, ive tried it, found is fiendishly difficult but enjoyed it a lot. I have done a lot more dickish stuff in parks in front of everyone.
I like climbing, but indoor climbing is so expensive and being outdoors is half of the fun.
I just had some tech queries on best gear to buy.

Doh. Thank you.

I'm away from my bike so can't measure it myself, hope someone can help me out so I can order to have waiting on my return.
What size p clip would fit 1/3 - ½ way down the leg of a Surly beater (ie Steamroller) fork?

The helpful advice you're getting in the road bike thread is the exact reason I did what I did.
You definitely shouldn't listen to me, I had a 3k road bike budget with no idea what I wanted, so my eventual purchase was evidently a terrible, terrible mistake. I'm 5'4" tall with 700c instead of 650b on all my bikes, and I have a 29er even though obviously it's so small that the geometry makes it completely unrideable, and I use rear racks instead of front racks, and I also use spacers/don't use spacers on my headsets, and rim brakes instead of whatever else it is I'm supposed to be using to make my bikes usable. I'm very happy with all of my bikes, but, y'know. I'm deluded. And clueless. With bikes that don't work and that are uncomfortable. I've imagined all the many, many, comfortable and happy miles I've ridden, I guess.
