I'm thinking of getting something to put gears on. Planet x Kaffenback or something similar looks like a good idea, what other stuff is out there?

If you wish to put big tyres on then clearly the weight penalty of disc brakes ain't going to make a great difference.

Ah many thanks!

I'm thinking dynamo wheel, panniers and stuff too. The pompino was supposed to have a rear pannier but when I put it on it messed with the chaintugs so took it off. Looking at these as a possible wheelset or something similar to those but disc.
I did consider 650b or whatever it is "monster" but then it's a mission to get the wheels sorted either handbuilt or I buy a truing stand and tensioner and sit for weeks building them to be a bit naff but ridable.

Not an especially stupid question
Why are most bicycles' drivetrain on the right hand side?
On the other hand, the answer demonstrates one of the stupid features of bicycles. Once you decide to make the drive sprocket a separate and easily replaced item attached to the rear hub, you have to find a simple way to attach it. Threading it on was a simple, cheap and dumb solution. Right hand (i.e. the most common type) threads work for this if the sprocket is on the right.

Pair of cantis for a touring bike. Anything out there that's a good deal right now? Was looking at Planet X's Frogs Bollocks.

Fuck it. Just bought some Tektro CR720s.

You came to the right conclusion (if you insist on cantilevers) without our help :-)

• #68068
Ha, cheers (I'm not investing in new wheels and calipers to go disc right now, and Vs/road calipers are not suitable in this case).

I'd go for Mini-V if I had road levers and cantilever bosses.
-
• #68070
I'd been using mini-Vs, but the mud guards/rack mean there's not quite enough space, and the stopping power (of the set I have, anyway) was a bit shit.
