  • Thanks, I think! ;)

I've not taken delivery of the wheel yet and it currently has a worn 19mm conti tubular on it. I might pump that up and see what the clearance is like.

  • Cheers Indra. It might be a pain to arrange a try out though. I don't get a lot of free time to go cross city these days for such things. You reckon you could somehow measure tyre height when it's pumped up.

If I remember correctly. The 23mm clincher did chip some paint off the crown when it picked up bits of road debris. I might just settle for a 23mm tub.

  • Cane Creek 40 series headsets: do the IS41 and the EC34 (1 1/8" external cup) share the same crown race?

  • Well I just measuered a fresh 25mm vittoria rally on a narrow rimmed ambrosio disc and it came out between 25.1 and 25.5mm from edge of rim to top of tyre at 130 PSI.

VS a 23c hardshell on a 23mm rim at 22.76 most of the way round at 75PSI.

Maybe this will give you some idea?

  • Might be ghosts in my head, but doesn't the diameter from rim edge to rim edge come out a couple of mm shorter on tubular rim, than on clincher rim.

  • Thanks for that. That's pretty much what I thought would be the case. I'll probably go for a 23mm Corsa SC to start with and see how I get on with that. Cheers

  • how much should i pay for some ambrosia Excellence, like new condition, they have ambrosio hubs and black Sapim spokes?
And also a good condition FSA Omega compact chainset?

I know there is a specific thread for this but no one seems to reply on there.

  • I have a new handlebar for my track bike, which is nice. However, the handlebar's in the UK, and the track bike's in Switzerland. What are the chances of airport security in the UK getting grumpy about me having a rather spiffy Easton EC90 track bar in my hand luggage? Having to check it in as hold luggage would be a nuisance and would cost money, both of which I'd rather avoid.

  • Get the huge tub, you'll eventually use it.
White lithium is fine for basic bike maintenance.

  • I'm looking to get some grease to install pedals... but I don't need much - everything I can find online are huge tubs!

For metal on metal connections which are not supposed to move (threads, seat posts), you want a copper anti-seize grease. For stuff which is supposed to move (bearings) you want a Molybdenum Disulphide grease. Go to your local motor factor and buy a 0.5kg tin of each, they will last a lifetime for most people.

  • White lithium is fine

I've never been impressed by white lithium grease, but my tin of Shell Retinax AM with MoS2 has never let me down.

  • ^ You tend to use equipment harder than most, so I guess the lithium melting out of your BB would be more of an issue.

  • Yeah, but £2 for 20g vs. ~£10 for 500g from your local motor factor. If you're in this for the long term, you might as well get the lifetime's supply now :-)

  • Yes, I agree as this is what I have and the tin has lasted me for about 30 years so far and less than a third used.

  • anyone willing to calculate the top tube angle for me? or direct me to an browser app that can? x

  • There's no measurement.

  • My protractor says 4°45'

  • It's over 15 years since I lived there, but I'd be more worried about the Swiss customs wanting to charge import duty on them.

  • What's the comparison?

  • I don't understand the question.

  • I've never been impressed by white lithium grease

What's the difference between lithium grease and moly that makes you choose the later?

  • Isn't it because if you need to move further than your rails allow and you already have an inline you'll have to have a set forward which will look ridic.

If the frame is made with some set back in mind and you want to go further than rails allow you can go inline...

  • What's the difference between lithium grease and moly that makes you choose the later?

    The MoS2.

Retinax AM (latterly called EPX2*) is actually a Lithium-soap thickened grease (nearly all commercial greases are), it's the addition of MoS2 solid lubricant which makes it better than lithium greases without EP additives.

    * and they've renamed everything again. Of the current Shell range, I'd pick Gadus S2 V220AD as it has the MoS2 and it is Lithium/Calcium thickened, which is more water resistant than plain lithium. Buy online ~£6 for 400g.
