  • White Industries>Halo Clickster>Shimano>Dicta to suit your budget.

  • Anything on tartybikes.co.uk, they are also really nice and sorted me out dead quick and for free when my bazillion engagement point freewheel exploded the day after the warranty ran out.

  • I destroyed 3 or 4 of the BLB Superior and Royal freewheels in very short space of time. Coupled with the stupid, shallow 8-prong interface I'd recommend avoiding them completely.

  • Much polo has not yet broken the WI 22T Chan gave me to motivate me to stop playing fixed. I'm not sure how much use he'd put into it but I've given it another 2 years of torque and occasional cleaning. I haven't noticed any skipping and there isn't any play.

I've since bought another one new for my spare wheels.

WI = Good value for money, even at £80.

  • ^ this.
Mine has been off road on my Surly since 2006. It has had about 10 new chains now, but has never needed any maintenance.
Cheap especially as the Shimano one I started out with lasted 4 months.

  • u wot m8>?

  • -17º A-head stems in silver, 31.8 clamp - where or who? I've seen vague references to a Nitto NJ 89.

Also, In-line, 27.2 seatpost in silver, with a good clamp design - that's not a thomson, possible?

Ignore me, found some with google - i'm sure I got different results before...

  • Velo Orange make a nice look -17 stem.

  • Thomson X2 stem comes silver and 17 degrees. You could then get a matching 27.2 Thomson Masterpi... Oh.

  • need 31.8 clamp.

  • Oh, thompson stuff may happen - was just after alternatives - just in case I could save some ££.

    Found:

Still, the control tech stem is quite expensive at $44

    Kalloy SP-368

  • the control tech stem is quite expensive at $44

Let me know if you find a cheap 17° in any colour :-)

  • Annoying huh? I recently got a polished black one from planet x for £9.99 - as far as I can tell it's the same as the Velo orange ones, just in proper clamp sizes. They seem to be sold out now though.

And cheers for the Kalloy model number, I knew it must exist. Now to find one.

  • Despite some sensible advice from @edscoble and others to purchase a set of 650b wheels I cannot stretch to that sort of purchase at the moment so last night I fitted a spare pair of 700c wheels to my (apparently un-sellabe here and later on the Bay) 26" LHT.

I have had success, of sorts. The tyres shown are 35mm Kenda Happy Mediums. I have about 2mm of vertical clearance on the front, a bit more on the back. Clearly not good enough.
I can't see why I cannot just get some long reach caliper brakes which should give me enough space for guards - am I missing something obvious?

  • What's the reach on the Motolite?
I've seen calipers up to 95mm or so.

  • Medium or long reach does the job

  • Get some 32c tyres, job done...

  • Not sure what the reach is and Google bit helping. Will measure later.
@>>>>>> need the fatties AND mud guards. Just do.
@Thuekr I reckon you are spot on.

The Surly's 26" LHT fork is actually only a tiny bit longer than road fork, almost on par with audax fork length, you can fit a caliper but given the clearance, cantilever work the best for that scenario allowing a lots more clearance, especially with mudguard.

edit - must admit I forget about the dramatic stretch of drop between the canti mount and rims, so cantilever is a no-go.

  • Yeah... no-go for cantis... I'm gonna ride for a while as is and see how things go. Without the pedals the BB seems dramatically higher with the 700c wheels but reckon when I have cranks/pedals fitted it wont feels quite so severe.
Depending on how things go I might buy the soma champs Elysees fork (reviews anyone?) and they jury rig a guard around the brake at the back...

It will be a lots higher than track bike.

  • I wouldn't care about 20mm higher BB for using and cruising.
