Bicycle tyres, why are they so expensive in comparison to car tyres?

They aren't - well not in larger sizes anyway - £120 a corner for Goodyear Eagle F1's for the legacy...

Booooo thought it wasn't like any bit of hertfordshire I'd seen before.
If it makes you feel any better it is an absolutely stunning bit of road and there are lots of other equally amazing roads for riding and driving in that area. Then when you get bored of the roads there are some great mountain biking trails to be found and you also have the right to roam so can in effect go anywhere (apart from parts of the Balmoral estate which is the other side of Breamar from there, the Police might get a bit shooty if you go there, especially if the head lizard is staying).

Bicycle tyres, why are they so expensive in comparisonison to car tyres?
People moan about this in my shop all the time, usually when buying a £10 tyre, after swearing under my breath I tell them it's because there are half as many tyres on a bike, so they do twice as much work and need to cost twice as much .

£50 for a 195/50/15 "sports" tyre, or £60 fitted.
How much do shops charge to fit a bicycle tyre, £10? That would make it £40 fitted for a 700c tyre.
The £10 on fitting a car tyre involves balancing and hydraulic machinery, the £10 for fitting a bicycle tyre takes about 10 minutes max? No mechanic I know is earning anywhere near £60/hour.

'Because we are rampant profiteers colluding to fix the price of £10 tyers everywhere.'
'Because new child slavery laws are pushing up prices'
'Attractive people pay £5. You pay £10' -

When you think about actual volume of rubber, the car tyre is giving you a lot more rubber than the bicycle tyre.
Is it the puncture protection material?

I'm not complaining, I'm not a skimping either, I know buying £10 tyres is a false economy, that's why I don't buy £20 tyres for my car either, I'm just intrigued to know where the money's going.

is a £50 "sports tyre" really the equivalent quality to a £30 700c ?
£30 will get you a handmade Veloflex clincher...
-
• #48813
£50 is the price buying from the tyre shop. £30 is standard price for Contis, Specialized, Schwalbe, etc from bike shops.
Yoko Parada Spec II fair enough isn't a Conti, Michelin, or Pirelli brand, but I'd happily say they are a premium tyre, Yokos come fitted to premium performance cars form the factory.

Bicycle tyres, why are they so expensive in comparison to car tyres?
Small production volume, mostly. A large part of the final price is covering the development and tooling cost. I bet the horrid tyres found on BSOs are about the same price per kilogram as car tyres.

OK, that makes sense. I didn't think there would be that big a difference though.

Cross-posting from the DD ride thread.
This has happened to my spd-sl plate inserts. Threads are gone so I can't tighten cleats in.
Can anyone tell me what model these are, so I know what specifically to search for, or where I might find a pair of generic inserts in time for tomorrow? Thanks!

They're not the kind of thing that a shop would stock I don't think.
Chain reaction cycles have some but that's not going to help (unless you pay for uber delivery)... http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=28899

• #48818
Why would a shop not stock them? Is it because they come with shoes and it's rare for them to be replaced?
The chainreaction ones are discontinued too :) -
• #48819
^ answered your own question.
They rarely fail and if they do, it's probably because the shoe is at the end of its life etc etc disposable culture etc etc.
New shoes it is.

I've noticed some people with roll top small rucksacks. A bit like dry bags but were the clip section seems to connect to the sides of the bag.
A bit like this in terms of the securing mechanism:
...but closer to this in terms of style:
They look like the type thing you'd find in Blacks. I've searched on Blacks and Cotswolds but can' find them.
Anyone got any ideas?

I want a quick answer why 4 decimal places is overkill when presenting data. It's something I just "know" from the lab. But while I'm "sure" of the answer, for the current situation, I can't use the words to convince someone who is refusing to bend to my will.

what size bolts I need to attach the callipers mounts to the frame? M6?

@ chalfie - I get this problem too. It can give the reader a perception of accuracy which may be misleading given the margins of error introduced in calculation and the nature of the assumptions on which it is based.
Yep.
