  • Because the new bike has no round bits to clamp to I was look at alternatives. I've since found a way to mount it between the bars so this discussion is a bit irrelevant now but it's better than what I'm working on at the moment so.. carry on :)

  • I reckon you'd be fine.

Based on absolutely no calculations, armchair or otherwise.

  • Where's the best place to get spokes from, need some black stainless steel ones, preferably double butted?

  • Other people's wheels, just one off each mind.

  • What size are the discs on this?

  • Anyone seen or heard lynx recently?

Cyclebasket ACI are probably the cheapest decent ones, unless you can find a deal on your exact length by hunting around. Last time I looked for pricier ones PX, and Rose had some Sapim in some sizes cheap.

    How recently?

  • Within the last 5 days.

  • Are IS mounts specific to the size of disc rotor, or is that governed by the adapter which you use?

If so, who can find an SM-MA90-R140P/S for sale from a reputable UK shop?

  • Pretty sure it's all in the adapter.

  • Anyone know much about Jamis road bikes?

I am looking for a steel frame, carbon fork road bike with a budget of £1000, and the Jamis Bosanova seems to fit the bill with the added bonus of disc brakes, am I missing something?

Depends on what the IS mount was initially specced for I'd have thought. My Wound-Up is IS 160 - I'd be surprised if I could inverse shim it to 140.

Is this for the Oak? Rear brake mount? Check the spec on the drop-out.

  • Do the brakes fit straight onto the mounts?

  • Howard- the rear dropout is a Paragon Machine works low mount disc dropout.

I cannot find any info on what disc size that is designed for.

Snotter- the caliper is a BR-CX75, which is post mount, the Paragon dropout is IS.

I want to run a 140mm Hope floating rotor.

  • For a few quid these might be worth a bash.

  • Err no, they won't. Unfortunately you can't just take a punt with these.

The calipers are Post. The mount is IS. You need IS to Post, but which one is dictated by the spec of the IS mount on the drop-out. Given it's a road frame I'd be surprised if it won't take 140mm rotors with an IS-Post mount, but it depends on the whims of the designers of the drop-out.

  • I though the IS bit meaning International Standard means they are all the same, most brakes don't bolt directly onto the IS mount, although some do, I would have thought the size of rotor in these cases is directed by the whims of the caliper designers. When you get down to 140 I'm not so sure as it's teeny tiny. The main reason I'd have thought the PX cheapo ones won't work is due to the dip in them not being deep enough to fit that specific caliper in, but if you happen to need £17.01 worth of stuff from PX they might be worth trying to get the free postage.

  • I can't find that info, so I have splurged £8 on a Shimano XTR IS to post 140mm adapter, and will simply hope that it works.

  • SOGA: TW2 alert.
I bought a lezyne pack. It failed, the qr qr'd itself somewhere in Kent.
    HOW CAN I WIN?

Post mount calipers don't care about rotor size.

IS mounts are standard, you are right - 51mm between the mounting holes. I thought distance from axle could vary, internet isn't sure.

PX Post to IS calipers won't work, because he needs IS to Post.

Adapters are caliper design specific, you are right.

Shame nobody makes prefab Post mount drop outs for artisan frame builders but hey, that's life.

  • Ah, for some reason I thought they were IS to post, saw them earlier whilst browsing and they were just in my head.

I know the post mount calipers don't care about rotor size too, when you mentioned your wound-up I thought it was a bike, not a fork (dunno too much about CX) there is a 20mm difference in post mounts front and rear, so if you stuck a 160mm front set up on the rear it would fit a 140mm rotor. I think so anyway, I could be wrong, where's tester when you need him to tell us both why we're wrong?

  • That's right - the same caliper that worked with a 160mm front IS will work with a 140mm IS rear assuming the mounts adhere to the 'standard' IS dimensions.

    Fun and games.

  • What is a better wheel option for my everyday road bike?

Either some shimano r500's from ribble for £65 new OR

something like open pro's (or similar traditional quality aftermarket rims) to built onto some sort of branded hub, like 105's - 32spoke. But in a varied state of used-ness and priced something between £80-£100 accordingly
