At which point during its melting and burning the house down should I become concerned?
-
• #46078
You have achieved 'concerned' at the right point in proceedings.

Poor quality plug + high current = hot.
I have a cheap heater that does the same thing on higher settings. Would replacing the plug help/fix it?

From my physics course 20 years ago heat is due to resistance, so larger guage wire, better conductors, better joints and so forth should reduce the heat.
To put it another way a better plug is unlikely to make it worse, if fitted correctly.

My girl wants to take the bikes on the train down to new forest. Are there any trains that 1. allows regular bikes on and 2. has you sit down next to them to make sure noone walks off with the carbon?
-
• #46085
You should be able to book your bikes onto the train if you buy your tickets in advance, and generally there are jump seats available next to the bikes.

not on that line:

just turn up off-peak. I think the current stock on that line has a 3-cycle rack opposite the toilets in the vestibule of some carriages. No near seats facing them, but a chunky hand-rail above the rack you could lock them to. -

I opened it up and the plug looks fine. I'll just run it lower until it melts or I replace it next winter (or summer in this country).

I wouldn't take my advice on this btw

Does anyone make a decent 18" bmx under £200?

Sorry for the n00b question:
I've got my eye a Simoncini but it's 56cm, I'm 6"1 so I reckon would be a tad small. Is it possible to supplement this with seat post and bar stem adjustment? Or is it a foregone conclusion? -

I've melted a few sockets in the past few years. Not much you can do with standard 13A plugs.

I plugged a small heater in briefly tonight and when unplugged the plug was pretty damn hot. I expect the air outside the heater to heat up, not the plugs. Risk much?
You want the heater to heat... Surely if the plug is heating up too it's being extra efficient?

It's fine. It must just be pre-heating the electricity.

Depends how you sit on a bike. I'm 6'1" and my road bike is 55cm, track bike is 54cm. If you have normal proportions, you should be able to make it fit without going weird. If you have a long torso, you might find it a bit short. If, like me, you like the bars low, you may even find the headtube on a 56cm frame is a bit long.

Oh ok, that's quite reassuring. Cheers!

Dearly beloved and I are off to Oz in a few weeks, we're gonna be stopping off in KL on the way there and back so we need to get shots...
Where can you recommend? We thought this was gonna be a nice, easy and cheap stop-over in Malaysia but , at first glance, the vaccinations look hella expensive... :$

Does your GP not do them? Also, think about what you'll be doing. We were recommended loads of stuff for going to Tanzania, but once you realise that you are not planning on sleeping with the locals, or handling animals etc., there's quite a few things that you can cross off.
On the other hand, if you're likely to go anywhere where you'll need the same vaccinations in the next 5 years, see it as a long term investment.

Is there any reason not to use the compression bolt on your fork as a headset press?
(Ie fit the cups by tightening the bolt on the star nut)I've already done it, just wondering if I should get another headset as a precaution! :)

My dad and his mates are doing the coast to coast in july http://www.c2c-guide.co.uk/
The 140m mile route, that apparently involves trail paths as well as road, has anyone done it? My Alan maxes out at 25C tyres so I guess that isn't ideal, so that leaves me Bob and 32C tyres, which would mean doing it fixed... I can't find out if its too hilly to do fixed or not?
It won't be fast my dad and his mates are doing it 50-50-40 over 3 days and some of them will be on MTB and hybrids
