^ What he said,
If you want to display the text on a second page but then change the text on a first page, paste special values on the second sheet, or use an IF formula so it won't change.

This seems so obvious i'm worried there must be something else wrong, but anyway:
If cell A1 on sheet 2 has anything entered into it, putting the formula =SHEET2!A1 anywhere else in the workbook will make whatever it was appear there too.
That's the problem, it's not working. I thought it was something I was doing wrong! Doesn't seem to matter how the cells are formatted either.
edit: strangely it's working on other parts of the sheet just how I want it to, seems to just be one or two cells.
That's what you get when messing with old workbooks that other people have designed I suppose, we do have somewhat "esoteric" files at work.
Seems sorted now, thanks for your help guys!

Only thing I can think of is that auto-calculation is turned off for that sheet. Try entering what I said, then hit the F9 key. If it then updates, it's because auto-calculation was switched off. If it doesn't, I'm not sure what the problem might be.

I am still getting problems with the destination cells not expanding to fit the text when I have the formatting set to wrap,I just want the row height to increase automatically but it doesn't always do it.
Any ideas? -
• #4281
Yeah that's always a pain in the arse. The easiest way is to double click on the dividing line between the row number and the one below, where the cursor changes into a kind of crosshair.
If you have any merged cells in that row, that can cause problems too.

ah, and auto fit row height too. doh!
thanks mattty -

No worries. Maybe we need an excel help thread...

Done http://www.lfgss.com/thread55409.html
Before Hippy merges it back here, let me say in its defence that it will keep all the excel questions/answers in one easy-to-search thread.

Good idea Matt. Well done.

Am I a pretentious twat for having written a folk/pop song about the last great auk in a granilloquent faux-archaic style?
I am aren't i?
I'm really not sure if I can pull it off.

Should I take the piss out of your spelling or just giggle at your inability to pull it off?
Decisions, decisions. -

I do not understand.

Faux archaic becomes faux naif

I was laughing at "pull it off". So I've no idea what Clever Will is on about.

Pompous = Grandiloquent.

• #4294
Hmmmm. Thanks Will. That's fairly obviously a typo no? Good to know you're so easily amused though.

This sentence has too many words I do not understand.
Could someone please help me?

problem is, although I'm ok with adjusting things, where the users have to enter text, they might not know how to set row height and get confused.

Yeah. Obviously.

If time is the forth dimension, what's the fifth; happy or dancing?

I was going for a sort of Pogues/Richard Thompson/Decemberists type vibe i.e. played straight but not taking itself entirely seriously. Ah forget you guys, i'm going to just sing it to a load of people tonight anyway. I'll let you know if they weep at the poignancy or laugh in my stupid face.

In that case it might be easier to not wrap text. Is this a possible solution?
If your original cell contains 'January', the easiest way is to do this is to type "=" in the new cell, then click the sheet containing the original cell, then select the original cell itself by clicking it, then hit enter. This enters a formula into the 2nd cell telling it to just repeat whatever is in the original cell, whether it is text or numbers.
Note that if you update the original cell, this change will also happen to the new, linked cell.
