yeah, actually... Ive disassembled it and the spring is there, its just oxidised and in shit condition. It doesnt slide up and down in that little sheath thing that mounts to the caliper. Should I just unleash WD40 on it?

Righto... its a tiagra caliper. I have a fully functional sora caliper here, exactly the same mechanism.
The right hand caliper arm is totally limp under load. I can close the caliper using gravity. The Sora one i need to squeeze against the spring.
The Tiagra one ahs the spring in place, it is moving in that little sheath thing that it slides through. Im stumped.
The spring seems to be doing nothing at all.

No, but life is not all beans.
Could it be clogged with road grime salt etc, clean it or LBS will have a replacement spring thingo.
