  • Yeah, I had a look in that Sidi thread. O'shane, I'm not worried about having shoes that look like SPD shoes, I'd rather have something that is comfortable and has good support.

  • I like my Sidis a lot - they get used and abused: commuting, clomping through supermarkets, mountain biking, touring. They've done a good couple of years and the only damage is that the heel is starting to wear where I don't always undo them properly to take them off. But they are thin, and my feet aren't, so if my feet swell after a long ride then they can pinch.

Basically, try shoes on in a shop, don't just buy online based on reputation. Find a pair that are comfortable and feel high-quality enough to last.

Might go down Brixton Cycles next week and try some on.
I've had no problems with my shoes I have now, but in the recent rain the total lack of waterproofing (they're sort of suede-ey) is proving a bit annoying. Towards the end of Dunwich I really started to suffer with nerve pain/numbness wearing them as well.

  • Sidis aren't going to keep you dry. I like sealskinz inside shoes for that, but I don't have a pair at the moment and they wouldn't fit in my Sidis at the same time as my feet anyway.

  • Aye, I know that. I thought they might be at least splash proof though, something my current shoes definitely aren't.
I'll keep looking anyway, and most importantly, try some on. Thanks for the advice.

  • I have quite wide feet and like my Diadoras.

  • So, gloves... I have a pair of 661 mountain bike gloves, all black, fit like... a glove. They replaced an identical pair that replaced an identical pair. None of them cost me more than £15.

So now that these ones are coming apart, why can't I find any non-garish, full-finger, decent-quality gloves for sensible money? Everything on CRC/Wiggle is really expensive or hideous, or both.

    Recommendations?

  • They look a bit crap, like those Totes socks that everyone wore for five minutes in 1997.

  • It's my brother's 30th birthday today. I've been asking what to send him for weeks (he lives in Sydney) but he hasn't told me (a recurring theme in our family). So now I feel utterly shit as I haven't bought him anything.

Does anyone have any bright ideas for a VERY last-minute gift?

    Thank you!

Seems I was posting in there a couple of years back. I'll have a look for the Spesh ones.

  • The Greyhound is no more. It is now the Brown Derby.

The cycle park next to On Your Bike costs doesn't it?
There are racks on one of the platforms still - but far fewer than there used to be. There are usually some traffic barriers/ sheffield stands to be found at the Borough High St / Duke St Hill pavement across from Evans.

Not any more! The bike racks on the mainline station have just been removed:

Amazon vouchers? Or is that a bit impersonal and rubbish? Everybody loves amazon...

  • ^^^I have that exact rack, I think. It seems solid.
But if you use it as low as in that picture, strictly you will need a light board for your reg plate and lights as the bikes obscure them, which is both dangerous and illegal.
I usually mount it way higher to avoid that but then I risk the whole thing shattering the rear window as it carries much more of the weight.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give this rack a go.

  • If I'm changing forks, should I be looking to change headset bearings while I have the opportunity, or is that something that only really needs doing if there is play?

  • I wouldnt bother if there is nothing wrong with them. bearings are easy to swap whenever.

Are you reusing the same crown race?

  • I just want to check my understanding of something....

If a folding bike has 500 A / 440 mm wheels (or tyres?). Then the ISO number is 440.

That is the diameter of the rim measured from the of the bead seat to bead seat. The bead seat is the bit just below where the braking surface starts(?).

If a 20" bmx tyre is 406 mm then:

    440 - 406 = 34

    34 / 2 = 17

So the bead seat would be 17mm lower on the 20" bmx wheel, right?

Which means a bmx wheel will fit fine, but there is a risk that longer reach brakes may be needed.

Is all of that correct, and does it make sense?

    Cheers.

That's brilliant. Why fight crime when you can fight stickers, particularly ones that are not acceptable.

  • fade's :)

  • Is all of that correct, and does it make sense?

    Yes

  • And there goes the last shred of respect I had for British policing!

  • Last night I was cycling home around 1am and pulled up to the lights near Clapham Common. Police car pulls up next to me in ASL. I get her to wind the window down and give her a polite telling-off. She tells me to "cope" and drives off.

Glad that they don't give a toss about that sort of thing, and are focusing on rude stickers. My tax money at work - on the things that really matter.

  • That sticker definitely needs moving, to make space for "stable M.Rees" to be appended.
