My wire cutters are blunt - do I just buy a new set or try and sharpen them somehow? They pretty new and weren't cheap, so I'm loathed to buy another set if I can help it...

Sharpen them - stone only the sloping face, if you can get a stone in there. If not, take apart if you can, if not, you are probably looking at a new pair.

Tiswas enjoys sharpening things- well knives at least, he might be able to assist with some advice.

cutting brake cables? tends to kill ordinary wire cutters made for electrical cabling
This is an opinion

Sorry yeah they're proper bike cable cutters, designed for cutting brake cable and housing. I guess they're just a bit shit, didn't get much use before they started mangling instead of cutting. I'll look into a stone, could use it for my nice chef knife too

Stooooop! Unless you want to make it harder, get a steel, not a stone, for that.

Name and shame
Worked fine to begin with, but then just started crushing cables rather than cutting them (after being used less than 15 times!). Wouldn't recommend at all, if only I still had the receipt I'd send them back. -

I have a feeling that I had a pair of jeggings, when I was 4.
It was the 70's, so I can be forgiven, because we were all on drugs back then.
Future evidence if needed.

Is there a thread on cycle touring on here, not an equipment one, just a general one?
If there is I cant find it. -

That whole forum was what I was looking for. Cheers Tiswas.

There is a famous film with a cross being struck by lightning, what is it?

I don't know.

If you bought them online, just email them for an RMA.
Steels aren't for sharpening - they're for keeping the cutting edge straight. Knives need a decent stone, and can be maintained with a strop or steel.
