Im joining a gym/athletics club which is a far enough that riding there in my regular clothes is uncomfortable.

Athletic lycra would be suitable attire at this place and was wondering if it would make the ride over there less painful.

Well, better than having the seam in your jeans rub you raw down there. Get some padded baggies and take them off when you get there, or wear a pair of paddeds over the top of your plain lycra?

Not a terrible idea, but I might aswell put up with the embrassing look of a padded arse in the gym. The extra compression id get from double layers, may get a little cosy and Id probably miss it when it came to squatting and what not.
