moths are phototactic and during the day they commute. they're attracted to lights at night because it disorientates them as they use the light to navigate.

Millions of years of evolution has allowed their internal clock from allowing to fly away into space. Those that do, dont get to breed and in turn stop day time genes from rearing their ugly heads! Technically, moths didnt have an issue really until humans started with lights because now the confuse the lights with the moon which is their reference point for navigation, as per HB comments.
