  • or they just pointed at their cheapest set of fixed gear wheels and assumed they're all the same.

  • I dunno, I have looked and those rims 32h seem to be pretty pricey, the shop were asked to do a valuation of what was damaged for an insurance claim, they should in theory know what this entailed. It may have been/and I am hoping was a misunderstanding.

  • if anyone has a set of those wheels they'd like to sell me second hand for £80 do let me know.

Loin, go to another shop and get a real quote

  • Would it be a worthwhile upgrade to go from the 2005 Bontrager Select wheels I currently have to a pair of Shimano R501s.

I weigh about 14 stone and these would see use commuting so need to be fairly resilient...

  • [strike] I need...[/strike]

    No worries - found it:

  • A friend of mine recently got his bike written off by a driver, she has accepted full reliability etc.

He just needs to get a valuation of his bike over to the insurers, but at the minute is having difficulty.

    cheers 'Loin

Mosquito Bikes on Essex rd, apparently do valuations. Usualy it's before the event, but they might be worth a call. Plus as a boutique bike shop they'll probably be reassuringly expensive.

  • Where can I get an appalling Xmas jumper before tomorrow evening? It's the staff Xmas party, and we've made the decision to "go ugly". City/Whitechapel or Clapham/Brixton are both available.

  • There is a place by the nice coffee shop in Soho, corner of Bateman and Greek street.

  • Looks possible, although maybe expensive? I'm hoping to spend £20 at the most.

  • TK Maxx?

R501s are nice, but I'd be surprised if they were actually an 'upgrade' from anything which is already circular, and while surprisingly robust they wouldn't be my first choice for a 14st commutenger. Get some handbuilt wheels, e.g. Rigida Grizzly + ACI spokes + whatever more or less equal sealed bearing hubs are on offer today.

  • Thinking of building up my Van Nicholas Yukon with blue hope parts (hubs, seatpost + possibly headset, bartape)

Would this look crap? I've currently got a 105 groupset which I'll be moving over (grey) or should I just go for black hope parts or even gun metal?

  • Has anyne got any drawings for a low flange front hub, found some ti at work and hubs seem to be the most likely thing i'll make and use out of it??

    Cheers

  • Surprised at the almost total lack on interest in the shoes I have for sale- what am I missing?

  • I really want them but can't commit to any more spending until I have sorted a road bike for Jess.

  • ^^ yes and no.

Obviously it's your bike so do what you like/want, but my opinion is that coloured ano is for BMX's and MTB's, and generally on parts that screw or hold stuff. That said, if done well you can pull it off on road bikes. But it's very easy to fuck up.

    • The coloured anodised metal *must *exactly the same colour - so parts from the same manufacturer are a good idea.
    • *Definitely *no coloured headsets - only shades of silver and black.
    • The Bar tape will almost definitely not match, so don't.

    I'd cautiously, suggest;

    • blue chainring bolts (which I guess if you've got a newer 105 crankset, will be pointless)
    • QR's
    • Seat clamp
    • one 5mm or less spacer sandwiched in between black or carbon ones.
    • nipples provided you have a low spoke count (ie max 28h/24h)

You've basically got to avoid this:

    Like I said all imo.

  • You've said exactly what I've been thinking. But perhaps I could go with the gunmetal (bottom left) on ti it might look quite nice.

Otherwise the silver looks a bit shit. Might just go for black to be safe. Thought about setting the frame off with a bit of colour but that might just attract unwanted attention as this is going to be my all year everything bike.

  • Does anyone know how to download a programme from iPlayer that isn't available as a podcast?
John Peel's Shed, if you are interested.

  • Surprised at the almost total lack on interest in the shoes I have for sale- what am I missing?

Bit chilly for this time of year.

    ;-)

I think that the gunmetal is a really nice colour, not too garish. I'd go for that as a colour for hubs, for sure.

  • Even on a ti frame though? Might look a bit too blingy.

  • I really dislike that colour, got it on a Hope Vision 1.

I think silver would look much nicer.

  • Red hubs make you go faster.

  • [QUOTE=dancing james;2583521]perceived wisdom is that Shimano tend to make the best brakes, so Dura Ace would probably win
Hello, does this go for the brake pads as well? I have recently bought some dura ace brakes off ebay but they didn't come with any pads. I seem to remember reading somewhere that their pads arn't all that good. Is this so or just a personal preference?

Not sure how much is down to personal pref but for a long time I'd used Dura Ace pads then switched to Kool Stop. The difference was amazing. The performace of the Kool Stop ones shat on the Dura Ace - especially noticable in the wet.

I have other, non shimano brakes on my other bike and always felt the brakes were inferior. Soon as I switched to Kool Stop on them I no longer had any worries, a massive upgrade.

They last for what seems a very long time even the salmon ones which I believe are a softer compound.

  • Do you need to upload Garming software to a PC to view your routes etc from your Garmin computer (ie can I look at my commute in at work who have a blanket ban on uploading software)
