If you don't need a hammer, it's not fitted properly.

I think would go on with a hammer actually I was just scared to use it on my carbon forks but they will be ok right? If i do have to cut the crown race is it going to be expensive?
-
• #16879
yeah they'll be fine, the carbon will deflect the hammer down on to the race.

Use the proper tool
And use inertia to counter the hammer blows, don't support the fork on any kind of anvil, either under the crown or the dropouts. -

cool, thanks for the advice, I don't suppose anyone has said proper tool i can borrow do they?

I'd like to keep the forks that are on my lavoro.
This means that I need to drill them, I understand that in the factory the crown are bunged up. Presumably I just drill through this (using a drill press, starting with small bits and working up etc) but is there a better way of going about it? Maybe a screw extractor?
Or will this fuck them up? if so are there any forks available with a similar amount of rake?

Drilling crabon is dumb. buy new forks.

alu fork crown
-
• #16885
Yes, but what Spotter is asking is if it's possible to remove the bung and how. If they are merely bunged then they just need a little work to make ready for a brake. The bung is most likely alu
Finding another fork of the same specs shouldn't be too hard. Alpina is just an aftermarket parts company anyway

Or just drill the forks and get also a helmet camera, so we can all enjoy.

Id rather buy a new fork than a new face

bung and the whole crown i believe

find forks with 30mm rake is surprisingly hard

Thought of emailing Alpina themselves?
I'm surprised it's difficult to find another fork the same as that one

they'll probably say don't drill them.
there are plenty of those forks available, i've never seen them drilled

Same fork as my Koga (actually a 4ZA Ellyps, also found on Ridley Ovals as well as being rebadged as Alpina)
They are a bugger to drill because the 'brake hole' has a steel screw threaded and glued into it. If you've ever tried to drill a hard screw out of a soft material you'll realise what the problem is. Even with a pillar drill, the bit is always trying to break out into the softer material.

If its screwed in can it be unscrewed?
-
• #16893
No, because it's glued in there with epoxy too.

• #16894
If it's just a steel screw glued in you should be able to unscrew it if you can get something to turn it
-
• #16895
i was thinking a straight fluted extractor, but it could rip up the crown

A random one...
I need a way of saying "premature ejaculation" in a email, without it being picked up by spam filters.
Probably the wrong place, but any one got any ideas?
Your internet dating is not going to go well, I predict.
Sorry I forgot to give you props for that yesterday.
