    No it's badged Basso, but it's not one. I'm trying to find out the make of the lugs. Someone on here asked about this lug marking a while back. I've searched but can't find it anywhere.

  • Unless I've got it hopelessly wrong, a long arm is for triple chainsets, short for doubles.

  • It's actually about total capacity, i.e. the amount of chain which has to be taken up between the big-big and small-small combinations. Long cage also usually, but not always, allows the use of a larger biggest sprocket.

  • Yes. Is it easier to imagine it another way; if you have a big difference between the front chainring diameters, you need a long arm rear mech. So a possible but unlikely combination of 52/28 set up as a double may still need a long arm version to take up the slack. Not an expert but that's what I've understood. A long arm will work happily on any likely combination, a short arm needs to be kept within its parameters.

    I reckon you did it wrong, or have the wrong tools.

    Check that the pointy bit of the tool that is supposed to push against the spindle, actually fits through the crankarm hole. Also make sure to screw the tool in properly.

  • Both good points, but I've stripped extractor threads on low grade cranks even when using the correct tool correctly.

    That's one of the minor Holy wars of cycling tech. In the olden days, I used to fully degrease everything, axle tapers and crank bores. The last few years, I've started using anti-seize (e.g. CopaSlip) on crank-axle assembly, having been persuaded by argument. It certainly makes disassembly easier, although that's not the primary argument in favour of assembly lubricant. If you think about it, a taper assembly is just a kind of inclined plane, just as a screw thread is. You wouldn't, I hope, dream of assembling a threaded fixing dry.
