Seriously though. You and hippy need to start a plumbing thread so you and he can post questions about boilers and bathers and your relevant pictures in the vague hope that RPM will give you 5p worth of free advice. Or did hippy merge the DIY thread?

DIY for me = do something I enjoy and am actually good at that pays money then pay someone to do stuff I want done but don't enjoy. If I could get someone to clean my bikes and wipe my arse I'd be set for life.
Fucking right! Aram can't figure out why I try to beaker-face my way into having him clean my bikes!!

Yeah I just can't seem to hold the skidding position and my legs are forced to turn again.
I will attempt to get my head around what you've both advised. There's a lot of leg miming and confused face going on right now.
Scoot, I have to agree with the shifting forward bit. It's flippin' scary, though, so try practicing when you're not going full out, at first. Also, what's your gear thingy? I couldn't skid AT ALL on 47 x 18 but switched to 46 x 19 and BAM! skid central*!
What else did I do? Oh, right, I think I was just not-going-forward with my left leg instead of actively pressing back and down. That definitely helps.
*for a certain value of "skid central".

It does look happy! It's even putting out new luscious leaves! (though I have no idea whether or not it will ever produce coffee)

Thinking about a crankset for a touring (next year)/cx/winter bike. It's going to be this mtb one I think, and the one I'm looking at has a 44t outer. With a 11-32t cassette will that be enough?
Sheldon says 107.0 - 18.4 gear inches. My concern is that 48t seems to be the most commonly recommended outer rings, and I don't actually want to buy additional ones.
Equally if anyone has any other suggestions for moderately prices suitable cranksets with an external BB, please let me know.
Cheers.

can anyone get me a current price for 1000mm sq, single core, copper cable today?
high level estimate only, not going to be held to it, it's for an preliminary estimate only. i'll need about 60,000m of it (yep, 60 kilometres). i know copper prices are crazy and it'll be as good as useless by the time it's actually needed in about three years but i need something to go into a paper today.
have calls in with half a dozen people but i'm desperate enough to be asking you lovely lot. any electrical engineers, estimators, quantity surveyors or project managers out there in bike land?
hate to sound ungrateful in advance, but if you don't know, please don't speculate or just google it.
thanks!

Single core, one metre square? 60km?
I don't believe it exists. -
• #15866
sorry, i should be clear. 1000mm2 is not one square meter. nominal conductor diameter of a 1000mm cable is about 76mm.
i have a cross section of it on my desk right now. it's 33KV rated cable for a route 2.5km long from new cross to south bermondsey from a new grid connection to a new substation. it'll be 2 circuits of 12 cables each hence, 60km. it'll have to be special order form pirelli or someone like that.

Exposing my mechanical ignorance here.
I have buggered my left Shimano 105 5600 10sp shifter. I'm finding it hard to find somewhere that has individual shifters in stock.
Do I have to replace with exactly the same thing? Would a newer 105 model work like the 5700? Is there an SRAM shifter that would work instead?

• #15871
I found somewhere that stocks L only the other day, I'll have a think and get back to you.
(can't answer the other questions, sorry) -
• #15872
Can't they be taken apart and fixed? Meaning you don't have to replace the whole shifter.

(can't answer the other questions, sorry)Cheers Tom, appreciated. I have found a few places that list them but they are all out of stock and unable to say when they will have new stock.

They are fairly complex things but I'd be willing to have a go at trying to fix it or to pass it to somebody to have a go.
I leaned into a corned and stacked it about 6 months ago and it has not ratcheted since. My creaking legs are demanding that I am able to shift to my little ring nowdays.

out of stock, sorry :(Hadn't checked there but seems to be same old story. Cheers anyway mate.
A new pair is about £160. A real pisser but worth it to get bike working correctly again.
