  • I'm taking another trip to a&e today and was wondering when it would be at its least busy. Any ideas? I figure 11 is a good time as the morning rush of injured commuters and next-day walk-ins will have probably past?

  • You should have been there at 6.15am

  • Fuck that.

  • find out if there's a minor injuries clinic (i'm guessing it's minor if you've been happy to wait) and that should be much quicker.

  • The part on my headset that is supposed to sit flush with the lowest part of the headtube gets caught on a small lip that comes up about a cm. Is this due to my cheap headset or am I supposed to sand off the lip? http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/9022/1002474p.jpg <<pic

  • 1) check that crown race is the correct diameter (there's atleast two different sizes)
    2) if its definitely the right size, and don't want to bother with the right tools, gently heat the crown race over a flame to expand it a bit, then drop it down the steerer (if you've done it properly it should more easily slip over the thicker section and sit flush at the base of the steerer) [be careful though, if you over-heat it could fuck up the crown race]

  • thanks for the help!

  • Why can't England play football?

Assuming it's the right size, rubbing alcohol, like isopropanol, works well as a lubricant, and use a piece of wood like a chisel to knock it in.

It seems like its less than a mm too small (this might be due to the cheapness of this headset). Should i heat it up and put it on?

No, you should get somebody who knows what they are doing and has the right tools to fit it for you. The lowest ~10mm of the steerer tube (not head tube) above the fork crown should be about 0.1mm larger in diameter than the bore of the crown race (the bit you have in your hand which seems not to fit). The reason why this is so is that the integrity of the lower bearing is contingent on the crown race being fitted to the steerer tube in a way which will prevent its moving radially under operational loads, and to achieve this it uses a precise interference fit. It is also essential that the top of the fork crown where the crown race will eventually sit is both flat and precisely orthogonal to the steerer axis. There are special tools for cutting this part of the steerer/crown assembly which will ensure that it is the right diameter and that the mounting face is flat and aligned, and there is another special too to drive the crown race onto the section of steerer which it presses onto, something which should take a fairly large force which must at all times be applied uniformly around the whole circumference of the crown race. Any good bike shop will have these tools.

Fitting a headset without the proper preparation or fitting tools is a recipe for never getting it to work properly, so it's worth investing a little money now on getting it done right rather than suffering from poor performance later. Getting the headset to pivot with the least amount of friction and play possible is vital to the handling of a bicycle, since every steering input has to be transmitted through the headset in order for the off axis contact patch of the front tyre to apply its leverage to your ass to get you to change direction.

  • +1 facing is one of the most under rated parts of bike mechanics, with it you will never get your headset running properly. You're better of with a cheap headset properly installed than a expensive one poorly installed.

  • Not having use windows in I don't know what the deal is with aniti vius stuff. I'm setting up a computer for my girlfriend, I've installed an anti virus program, what else do I need for good security?

  • My forks move a couple mm in the bottom part of the headset. Will this cause any real damage or can I just ignore it?

  • will reduce he life of your headset and probably ovalise your headtube

  • ill ignore it then

  • Dudes, does it matter from which side I install a cartridge bottom bracket? Previously the BB was inserted from the drive side and the cup on the non drive side. Can I reverse this as the drive side threads are being a bit temperamental.

  • So that means the thread is one continuous thread from one side to the other then? I dont know, I've never tried. From memory, though I might be wrong, the cup and BB thread on clockwise?

EDIT: Hang on... If they are different, they should both tighten the same way, no? If they are the same thread, i.e all the way through, they should screw in the opposite direction to one another?

  • Gotcha. Bollocks. I think I need that tool!

    Thank you.

  • Take it to a shop Balki. If not I look forward to seeing you on Epic Fail thread...

  • Well, I was referring to the thread tapper but as Brave said, I dont have the minerals to tackle that job myself. Im gonna try a pristine new BB tonight and see what happens.

  • What sort of discolouring do you get with Blue tyres...i've had white zaffiro's for about a year and need a new set of tyres...and they are no longer white.
Do the blue tyres get really horrible and dirty? If someone could put photos up that would be great
