if i clean up a rusty patch on the under side of a downtube, and cover the whole down tube in heli tape, will it stick and protect a bit from rust?

Probably not. Water will wick under the tape and make it worse. Either prepare it properly and paint it or leave it alone and give it a good slather with an oily/greasy rag.

Bit of zinc rich paint...cold galvanizing spray to stop corrosion.

Good insight, thanks!

I'm fitting a 1x12 to a 90's MTB frame. Originally I don't think it had a mech-hangar, so I've fitted the rear derailleur direct to the dropout and I'm imagining bending the frame/breaking the derailleur on my first ride...! Are there hangars for this purpose (and where could I find them)?

Does a shadow 10/11 speed RD work with your average non shadow 9 speed trigger shifter (Sora flat bar in this case)? Feel like I read that somewhere but maybe I didn’t 🤔

maybe I didn’t
I don't think you did.

Moon Mizar front is tiny, twists off and on and can flash at 100lm

Thanks, here - there's no issue without a hangar other than my fear of bending the dropouts/mech with some usual clumsiness. I assume any short hangar without an offset would do?

Stop worrying, just ride. It's steel, not aluminium.

Ta, will check it out.

I'd also swap out those Hope QRs if I was you. I've had so many come loose that I only worship at the church of the Shimano cam.
Also plus one on the just ride it. I had a frame like that for years without issue. Super worst case ever is you have to weld it back on (I imagine....).

We've got some Oxford jobbies in station south that fit the bill, I've had some as a back up set and because I like shiny things and am reasonably impressed so far, £25 for the pair but come in next Friday and I'll do you a discount. Kinda COB knog knockoffs.

That's a hanger, just not a replaceable one.
-
• #119095
Or nip in tomorrow or Wednesday/Thursday with warning and I'll tell Tom to knock you a few quid off.
-
• #119096
Yeah, anything else and the mech will be in the wrong place.
-
• #119097
If it helps, steel bends back well and you'll probably break the mech first.
-
• #119098
Eh? That is a mech hanger, and your mech is hung off it already.
+1 for ditching the Hope skewers, they look hot but are useless for clamping your wheel securely over time.

Anything is replaceable if you throw enough money at it 😀

Those skewers look cool. Just Geoff Capes them up and don’t listen to this lot 😀
Wow. Thanks
