  • That's just a random photo I found of her on the bike when she first got it to give a vague idea of what the fit was like. Even with the saddle adjusted properly she still isn't quite happy with it.

It's all a bit of a stab in the dark as she neither rides any bike much, nor has much experience of riding so I'm not quite sure how to start fixing the problem. We just want to get out down the canal path as a family, and I wondered if making it more upright would help.

What do you reckon? Am I barking up the wrong tree with trying to change the bars?

  • Yeah those were the first ones that popped up, but indeed - they all look very heavy!

  • Orpington Station environs is pure suburbia. Sevenoaks station you could do Knole park? Can’t remember what line Eynsford/Shoreham are on but some better footpath/field walking out that way, or Scadbury Park if Chislehurst is easy; not station-adjacent but a few nice bits along the way.

  • Am I barking up the wrong tree with trying to change the bars?

They wouldn't make those bars if people didn't like them, but then they wouldn't put lightly swept MTB bars on most OTP bikes if most people weren't fine with them. A hundred or so years ago when I put together a similar bike for my then current squeeze I used the On-One Mary bar, which is a happy medium between straight and fully turned back. The wrist angle is pretty natural, and the sweep shortens the reach which will naturally make the torso more upright. I think before spending any money I'd get a few rides in and ask her where it hurts.

  • Genuinely lolling at how similar the predicament and bikes are.

But yeah. Probably wise to just do more riding for now to help diagnose the issue, rather than randomly choosing bars in the hope they’ll work!

  • I think wrist angle change would provide the most benefit - 45° sweep or so is nice for me. A slightly longer stem may be necessary as coming back that far may be uncomfortable for her. Takes a lot of testing, especially when the client isn’t all in, ask me how I know.

  • Guesstimate. Possiblyprobably more.
No preload adjuster because there wasn't one included in the used crank I bought and not having a clue about bb30 I didn't miss it.
I think I'll try the wavey washer route. Lbs doesn't have them though; might need to resort to chi-na eBay and get it after holiday.
Why did I think this was a good idea again?

  • Ahh yeah, I believed the lfgss oracle!;)

  • Look for the bluebell woods near Sevenoaks. Even if they’re not in season, it’s a lovely walk, near some Iron Age castle iirc.

  • Thanks for that! And thanks @somethingclever , I'll look in to those!

  • Have seen a bargain Cannondale Synapse 2019 in size 51cm....but it's a women's frame. Apart from the saddle, bars, etc ..is there any difference in geometry? Looked at the geometry tables and a man's 51cm is the same?

  • What's my best (cheapest) source of closed cell foam, something like 6-8mm thick and say 400x800mm?

  • Pentonville Rubber on Pentonville Road.

  • Any reason a slightly ridiculous power strip like this wouldn't be suitable for domestic use, securely mounted under desk?

It's all computery stuff so am not concerned about total power use. Would be much neater than current situation (A 10-way and 6-way on a double socket) and avoid having to mess about with plugs cos of limited physical capacity.

  • S'all good if you're pulling less than 13A :)

  • I've got 12 way and 8 way versions of very similar power strips bolted to the bottom of my desk. Distinct absence of fiery death so far.

  • I hope it's fine because I've had something very similar in my TV cupboard for the past couple of years.

No issue with total draw, it rarely gets above 1A even with most of the sockets in use.

Obvious but be sure to measure up. They are very long.

  • Thanks all. Ordered.

  • Anyone good with thread sizes?

I need to replace the carburettor studs in my motorbike with bolts so I need to know the size to get.

I've read that the studs are 5/16" but that was all the forum post said, 5/16" is 7.9mm and that checks out with the stud I just removed.

I have metric and whitworth thread pitch gauges, the 22G from the whitworth one seems like a good fit.

5/16" unf is meant to be 24tpi and unc is 18tpi so I'm pretty close to the unf one.

  • Could be 5/16" BSF, which is 22 TPI

  • Double memory dredge here:

1: there was a band whose lead singer was known for climbing the rigging at gigs. Saw them do it at Glastonbury once, 90's. Blur?

2: there's a TV series where at the start of each episode/first episode of each series, a standalone character gets killed off. Something big, lots of seasons. House, Dexter, that kind of period.

  • No2 - Silent Shitness?

  • I think you’re right, cheers.
