  • I took it apart, cleaned and regreased it all and it's feeling less notchy at least, though I have no idea if it has fixed anything. Thanks for the suggestions, the weekend will tell whether it worked or not!

  • I have four sets of 42cm handlebars (carbon Ergonovas, alu Ergonovas x 2 and a pair of Deda Speciale).

Centre to centre, they all measure 40cm not 42cm - except one pair of alu Ergonovas which is weirdly more like 39cm. But they are all supposed to be 42cm, which is actually more like their total width (i.e. not c-to-c).

If you look up websites selling/that have sold these bars, they all claim the width is measured c-to-c. I don't know why this is, but given this is the case, should I buy new bars in 42cm too, even though everyone claims this is a c-to-c measurement?

It's a conspiracy! Why can't the bike industry be honest about the width of handlebars?!

  • Centre to centre

Are you measuring at the drops, or the hoods?

  • Often, sellers don't seem care enough. So I've usually seen it go like this: do the bars have packaging that states a number? If yes, that's how they will sell it. If not (i.e. used parts without a clear marking on it), they will measure it c-to-c. Hopefully. If you're lucky.

When it comes to figuring out which size you really want, there's no way past looking up how the manufacturers actually measure it. I've seen c-to-c / outside-to-outside at the bar ends, and c-to-c / outside-to-outside on the hoods. 3T, e.g., measures c-to-c on the hoods. Deda, I think, measures outside-to-outside, but I can't remember whether that's in the drops or the hoods...

  • I was measuring on the hoods but all the Ergonovas are 42cm in the drops!

Is this what I've been doing wrong?

Deda Speciale are 40cm in the hoods too. Also I forgot I have a pair of spatr bars which claim to be 42cm and they are 42cm hoods and drops too...

  • 3T, e.g., measures c-to-c on the hoods. Deda, I think, measures outside-to-outside, but I can't remember whether that's in the drops or the hoods...

This seems to fit with my measuring. And yes, some sellers don't even tell you which doesn't help. Decent manufacturer websites always help but I'm currently looking at Nitto M109AA's and I know that Nitto don't even list them on their website...

  • One of my pet peeves: manufacturers who can't even be arsed to just have a little archive section on their website that lists the specs of stuff they've made previously.

  • As an example FSA compacts will be measured at the drops but since they have a bit of flare are 2cm less on the hoods. So a 42cm FSA will put your hands on the same position than, say, 40cm Nitto bars.

And then there's the issue of the accuracy of the reseller's copy online.

  • Looking for local nice chocolate delivery (if that's a thing in current circumstances) in Brentford area... can anyone local recommend anywhere please?

  • Slightly more complex than the above...

My partner got a new Windows 10 laptop 6 mths ago, has forgotten the outlook password she created for the microsoft store & now realises her verification phone number is a digit wrong which explains why she isn't getting the password reset codes.

I'm trying to help but have run into a dead end.

All Microsoft avenues to reset this scenario get her to a form which asks for older password history (there are none) and if she ever used Skype or Xbox or bought a ms product using her account (no) so this triggers an auto email response once submitted asking her to fill in the same form but with more information for them. She doesn't have any more information.

My only other idea is to phone the wrong number in the hope 1) it is valid and 2) willing to help by relaying codes on to us.

    Any other ideas?

  • For some reason Nitto seem to effectively deny making the M109AA's. Which is odd. Perhaps because they're well priced for Nitto bars? No idea really.

  • And then there's the issue of the accuracy of the reseller's copy online.

In the end I called good old helpful Hubjub on the phone before ordering, who confirmed that the C-2-C width for the Nitto M109AA's is measured at the drops. So I've ordered some 42cm from them.

  • Nitto's just a small business, there are a few models missing from the website.

  • The technical spec of 3T handlebars is set out with complete clarity on the vendor's website — as it always has been since 'the new 3T' emerged in 2008. It's a pity that superseded models are not available in an online archive but any vendor is understandably more interested in selling you a new product.

  • I'm thinking of getting my mum a voucher for a ceramics/pottery course for her birthday. Is there anywhere that people can recommend? Thinking more like a 1 day/ weekend course type thing than a 1 night a week obligation. London or somewhere near Peterborough ideally!

  • My girlfriend did one here https://www.skandihus.co.uk/

She did the taster, enjoyed it enough that she signed up to the weekly thing.

  • I have an old hub built into a wheel, I'm replacing the internals and freehub with those from a brand new hub. How do I remove the freehub from the new hub? I've got the right allen key, but I don't have a clamp or vice to hold the hub in place to get any leverage. The best idea I've had yet is to bolt something into the disc mounts on the other side, but I'm not quite sure what.

    Any ideas?

  • Has anyone accidentaly put their garmin HRM through the washing machine?

    Did it ever work again?

  • What are the best (most attractive results/ease of use) license-free mapping tools for creating maps and potentially map animations? My OH is doing some work mapping events and locations; thus far she's been using Google maps, but might need something license-free (or something that her academic institution's likely to have a license for) to develop it further in the near future.

  • should do, it's a sealed unit apart from the battery bit which has a rubber o-ring seal to keep the sweat out.

  • License free is tricky, even the free ones probably have attribution rights. I've had access to Digimap through uni before for basic mapping and I think it's now open source.
https://open.ed.ac.uk/digimap-geography-mapping/ no animation with it though.

is she familiar with Adobe? You can get plugins for Aftereffects-Geolayers for example-that I've seen people use, or when I was at uni I'm pretty sure Google gave institutions free access to Google Earth Pro that also has animation/mapping tools.

Also possible to do map animations with Sketchup by importing tiles but think the resolution/scaling might be a bit shit for what you're after and again, it's just imported tiles from Google Earth.

There's also more complex plugins for Cinema 4D/Rhino that have a higher production value but would take a lot more time to pick up.

  • Attribution is probably OK; she may want to put together some maps/animations for publication, and had been led to believe that Google Maps' terms and permissions prohibited commercial use, so that journals and publishers might be leery of allowing them. Will have to investigate Google Earth Pro, ta.

  • Umm, what's the thread where you ask where things were posted?
Or more directly, where's the image someone posted recently, it looks like a newspaper illustration, and it shows all of the road as a chasm, with people teetering across crossings etc

  • Don't know what the thread was but this is the illustration.
