We took this: http://www.tarptent.com/scarp2.html#overview touring and hiking in the Alps last year - can't recommend them highly enough. We opted for the additional crossing poles too, as some of our camp spots were pretty high/exposed. Were very comfortable and could manage to get all our stuff inside (apart from bikes!) or in the side shelters without a problem at all.

Oh, this is a good one for proper touring.
I mean you don't want to throw a fully loaded bike on the floor when you need to pop out into the bushes. -

Have a look at double kickstand, this allow the bicycle to stand vertically, as having a single kickstand would be sketchy if you have too much weight on the panniers, especially on the fork

As I've got rear mount I will use that ESGE around the town and perhaps purchase the click stand thing in case off proper touring (the advantage is - I don't need to look for flat terrain).
We'll see. -

Can anyone recommend a good wheelset for light touring that will take a 28c marathon plus without too much struggle? Found it impossible to get them on the Fulcrum 5s on my g/f Geoffrey Butler.

My dad runs Marathons Plus's on Mavic open sport rims, laced to shimano xt hubs it think. He doesn't seem to have too much trouble. On the subject of M/P's watch this:

Onto Fulcrum 5s? Seriously I have changed more tyres then I care to think of - this must be a combination of wheels and tyre...just tried the video desuz posted and got within inches but no more!

+1 some combo's just won't go, or are so tough that you end up having to swap something.
when tubeless mtb came out a few years ago the number of people not wanting, but needing stainless tyre levers was incredible, and mostly all they did was deform the edge of the rim O_o

Because they dont work on it - its too tight and ends up tearing the inner...
if you start where the valve is, the trick is to push the valve inside the rims (but not all the way), this way you can push the inner tube away from the offending tyre levers.
it also work for installing tyres too.

early 2012, set me back something like 140 for the hubs alone, the hubs were able to generate voltage at a low rpm, which help with touring.
I'm going for dynamo front, battery rear, also will try and ride in daylight as much as possible.
That looks awesome! However I'm upgrading from 1kg to 2kg because I want the space.
That does look fun though.
