  • ^^^^^^ That was me (ref packing up bike in box for flight) just picked up box from local lbs and am off to BnQ over weekend for pipe insulation and bubble wrap. Will report back... Thanks again for photos.

^ like the skateboard idea too

  • one night, which was enough. if the temperature gets anywhere below... basically i did in the north of france end of august and was so cold i woke up every 30 minutes cramping.

Nosier, did you use the hammock without a sleeping bag?

  • You are supposed to use a sleeping bag :-/

  • Depends what gas - I had a primus stove and could only get find the specific canisters from high quality camping shops and certain decathlons, outside of france it became pretty useless.

The blue Campinggaz canisters were alot easier to find and sold in most supermarkets

You can get a small converter to make the Camping gaz (pierce able) cylinder fit screw fit stoves

  • You are supposed to use a sleeping bag :-/

And a thermarest to insulate your underside

  • ^ Even with both I could never get warm enough in a hammock, sent it back.

  • Hammock sound awesome, doesn't sound practical.

Having slept with both roll-up mattress and inflatable, I find that I'm warmer with the latter as it created a bigger pocket of air between I and the ground, also pack a lots smaller, like coke-can small.

  • Hammocks arent made for european conditions i guess... Id get one if I were to camp in places where you really dont want to sleepon the ground due to dangerous fauna etc.

  • I was recommended a hennessy hammock by a friend but for one reason or another I didn't buy one, when I was camping with a tent I was too tall for it and I could never stretch out straight. So after a miserable experience with tent camping I have bought an extra long Hennesey but am yet to try it. Felt comfortable on the common next to my house though!

  • I've used hammocks a lot, Hennessy hammocks mostly and I love them.
For cycle touring, give me a bivi bag any day.

  • Northern Europe that's for sure, even in September, it's still ridiculously hot in the South of France, with the exception of mountainous terrain like the alps.

  • Meh for me personally it cools down too much at night to be sleeping without tent and bag

  • Fuck man, I want to tour again.

    good to know!

  • This topic got me going through my photo library looking at old snaps;

On ferry sending last texts before arrival.

Realising our stupidly of arriving in France on a Sunday morning, everything is dead and nowhere to buy shit.

    Cunit.

    Hit a rock at 20mph.

Cous-cous, tinned tomatoes and some spice.

    Spain is awesome.

    Like, really

    Fucking

    Awesome.

Wild camping at night can be shitty, trying to find a clearing that's not riddle with thorn, fortunately our tent is very capable of withstanding them.

Almost a rigid MTB; fork is bottomed out.

    Moroccan dirt.

Avoiding the main road by going 50km away from the sea give us some peace and quiet in Morocco.

Map (route drew on black line).

    Casablanca.

  • Love how your set up looks so simple next to the panniers and rack combo.

  • ^^awesome! Makes me wish I could see more of Europe this trip. Riding fixed did you find your normal gearing alright or did you change it at all?

  • Under 65GI, bike total weight is 14-16kg, was fine.

Normal is 67GI, 65GI felt like 67GI when laden.

  • Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck I wish I had seen more of Spains inland last summer!

Now I know what Ed looks like... At least from the side

  • Do any road frame/forks for 29'' wheels exist? Sweet frame with 29'' mtb wheels n disk brakes would make a nice tourer maybe...

  • Yes. The question is how wide tyres you want to use.

  • Must depend on the purpose of the tour.. I'm not a fan of wider than 28 tbh. Not sure if 29'' wheels come that narrow though.

Got any examples of those frames?

  • Virtually every road frame pre-1980?

  • They'll not have disc brakes.

There are plenty now. Some cyclocross inspired, others (like Salsa, Surly and Genesis) are just multipurpose, practical road bikes with 135mm spacing at the back.

  • Looking at the brands you mention but cant seem to find any. Am I overlooking things?
