Do they use all that and carry a backpack?
I presume in some areas they have to camp, but does the route put them in wilderness areas for multiple days in a row?

So I'm thinking of heading off on my bike for a week or so on a little trip. Nice and lightweight, just the rack top bag with supplies would I be better off with a lightweight tent or Bivi?

Yeah, oil cloth; looks and smells like old camping tents - lots of chemical goodness.
Leather trim would be difficult with my machine, no can do that.
You would supply your own strap.
Shipping from Canada to ? probably $10-15.
All in, call it $35."ral ref is poss !" < ?

Found a couple of leather straps with buckles from an old Swiss pack, could include one of those if you can deal with the added seconds of latching time.

That being said, Carradice makes one for about the same price, and better finished than I could manage without a lot of practise.

That's what I was thinking chap but then I've got the extra weight of a tent to deal with unless I can get myself a tiny lightweight one - which doesn't cost too much. Maybe I'm asking for too much lol.
