Correct, all you need is an ssh connection and use vi
I am developing a php/mysql based booking platform at the mo in "proper" code :)
This way i feel a complete coder, not some user who knows how to drag and drop pretty elements into a form
:)
We can all do that mate if we need to ... but I prefer an IDE with intellisense ... Cuts down on the amount of typing and tells me when I haven't closed tags etc.. dunno why "real" proper coders make it hard for themselves. Real developers make a job as easy as possible by using the best tools not out of some macho pride to be "hardcore" ... each to their own though.

Fair play if you can, my point/gripe/moan was aimed at those who cant :)

vi
ducks
I use vi (well, vim and specifically macvim) pretty much exclusively! It's very extendable, there's a plugin to do just about anything, including support for intellisense. I like that my personal setup is almost ready to go on any platform.
dreamweaver cs5 has wordpress and joomla support now
Dreamweaver is really the only option when you have a large team working on a website as it makes it easy to tell who has done what and when they did it.
This is not true, the world of version control goes far beyond dreamweaver. Git is my favorite.

For the Mac, probably the best gui editor is Textmate, but if you want all your csses and your terminals built in, coda and espresso(http://macrabbit.com/espresso/) are really good too.
obviously vi is a great tool (and I love it), just quite a lot to unlearn for the average user.

Well, I just ordered the new Mac Pro Hex core 3.33ghz with the ATI HD 5870.
I'm now very fucking poor.
unless you have a need for lots of cores the 6-core 3.3 is a smart choice if 16gb of ram is enough. it all depends on what software you use and if it is ram/processor or graphics card dependent.
was thinking about an 8core but only one of my apps makes use of them but the time saving isn't really going to gain much in productivity.
will think about using a SSD for either a boot or scratch disk though (when i eventually get a new machine)

There is even a plugin for VS to make it like VIM. I use it as a replacement for notepad. However I do all my work on ASP.NET so I might as well use VS.
I dual boot OpenBSD and use that for learning C and basically mucking about ... however my macs that I used to own are all dead now (iBook G4, bondi blue iMac g3).

Yup! Did my homework on it, and since I'm using mostly apps that only use a few cores at most the hex was definitely the best choice, absolutely wipes the fucking floor with the rest of them in that respect, only one faster is the very top of the line hex, even the second to top hex is slower. If I were doing rendering or such it'd be a completely different matter, but I'm not. I was thinking of using an ssd to boot from or record onto then transfer to storage later on, still pricey though, might wait for them to drop a bit first.
It also can actually do a maximum of 24gb of ram (usual apple LIES), but I can barely afford 12 so that's not so much of an issue.
I now have two weeks of agonizing waiting.

I need to upgrade my OS from 10.4 to at least 10.5. However I can't just buy the 10.6 and upgrade it, no Apple won't let me. Apparently I need the Mac box set (with loads of software I'll never use) for £129. Fuck that!
Suggestions how I get round this?

there must be some old stock leopard disks available?

so i have a portable hard drive - can't remember what it's formatted as - presuming ntfs.
i know its been a week but I use paragon. The drive shows up like a regular finder window. I have ntfs files that are over 4 gigs and I was able to move them from pc to mac with it.

Looking for that, not having much luck. I get the feeling Apple withdraw them when the new version comes out.

no you don't, this is crap
Apple say you need the box set, you don't - either SL works on your machine, or it doesn't
if you have an intel CPU it will work, if not, it doesn't

you don't need to upgrade to 10.5.X first either, just get SL and upgrade

• #867
Really? Apple are lying to me?
-
• #868
yes, they do that
-
• #869
profusely. i bought a copy of SL for about 25 quid or whatever it was. clean install and upgrades from various OSs all work a treat.
they lie like their pants are on fire.

buy the 25 pound upgrade. Install it. They all have the same data, just different price points.
Its what I did from 10.4
