  • Worried my ignorance is being exploited and I'm getting fleeced... Bought a mac mini i7 in January, was a bit slow seeming but I thought I'd give it a while and see if it improved or whatever, couple of weeks ago I decided it was too slow and I had to take it back. After trying to get me to buy more memory which I refused, installing the OS again (mavericks, which didn't work) and telling me they were going to install an older OS instead, because then it would work (which I refused as well because they sold me this as a new machine so the newest OS should work), they said they would put in a new hard drive...

But it's STILL FUCKING SLOW, I'm thinking they've just said they were going to put a new hard drive in and... haven't.

Don't really know how to proceed or if I'm being paranoid. Photoshop takes about 90 seconds to open up and just web browsing is slow..

  • How much ram do you have in it? Mine was the same with 2gb ram... thought it didn't bloody work!
I know you should have to reallllly.... but pop 8gb in it?

Actually fuck it, if its that slow take it back and demand a refund?

  • Thats the thing, I bought it thinking it should just be pretty quick as is but maybe I'm out of touch...
About this mac says 2.3 ghz intel core i7 processor, 4gb memory, start up disk untitled(?). Yeah maybe another 4gb would do the job, I'll give that a go, cheers

  • The i7 will be pretty powerful, where did you buy it from? You know to buy RAM from crucial right? And in pairs...

    I believe... but double check.
Also, if you want it to flyyyyy.. get a SSD.

  • But the mini shouldn't be slow that all that horse power.

Is it slow even just opening other programs?

  • Did you buy it from Apple?

  • my mac mini i7 with 8gb ram and ssd is plenty fast.

  • Didn't get from apple, got from a place two friends got decent machines and both recommended. Might get the 8gb and SSD, but worried theres something up with it besides that... thanks for the advice. Thing is I'm not sure how quick it should be, would be good to work on one that worked properly for comparison. Thanks for the link Chris.

  • What would be the price range for a Dec 2012 Macbook Pro Retina 15" ?

    Spec

Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000
    Software OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
    250GB hard drive

    Applecare until 10/12/2015

  • I'd imagine ~25% off current model rrp

  • can't find the exact same though (in terms of flash storage)... any ideas?

  • I didnt know they even did the retinas with solid hard drives!

  • Apollo, MacBook retinas like yours have plummeted in value, I doubt you'll get much for it at all. Prob not even worth selling. Drop it off round mine and all dispose of it for you.

When I was on the hunt for a second hand one the average price was around 1200 I think. I paid 900 for mine but it has lower specs and no others were that cheap at the time.

  • Some of you might remember I got a mac mini 2011 model with 60GB ssd and a modest miss match 4GBram. I no longer have plans to upgrade it unless I absolutely have to, my question is do you think this would be enough to play a video on loop all day long for a week? It struggles to to play candy crush and watch netflex... It's either this or I buy a cheapo media player for the loop job... thoughts?

  • That should me more than fast enough... it prob has more power than a 2004 Mac Pro... do you run cleaning/maintenance apps often?

  • I have only had it for a couple of months, bought it from gumtree, put a brand new ssd in since and hardly ever use it... Plan has always been to use it for the show coming up now... But the struggle with playing candy crush and playing netflex has me worried a bit...

  • Netflicks problems probably aren't to do with the hardware, more the software. Can't talk about Candy Crush, but I had the same Mac Mini and I played Half Life 2 on it fine, so doubt it.

  • +1 netflix problems are mainly down to silverlight

  • +1. Also change the bandwidth settings. It's normally on auto, which is always shit. Work out your bandwidth and set it to that, helped a lot for me.

  • My bandwidth is on manual and I do change it when one gets slow etc, as far as I know, I am uning one of the "quieter" channels. Ben, did yours only have 4gb? TBH, nowadays everything requires twice as much as box standard, this is my only worry. The mac can refuse to work half way through the show, but it can't just be slow and have pauses.... Simply because I don't want people to mistake this as the work...

  • Does seem odd. Maybe the mis matched ram is causing an issue? Wild guess...

  • This was my thought as well... Which is why the debate, it'd cost memory to get any ram than to just get a media player... Either will be of little use to me after the show...

  • do you run cleaning/maintenance apps often?

    Any to recommend?

  • Onyx is great.
