  • ^ yeah was considering that or the Focusrite Sapphire Pro 24

    http://www.focusrite.com/saffire_pro_24_dsp/

Ooh that's nice. Did you see my Mackie woes on the guitar nerd thread? Sure you'll be gravy with that and a mac. Input compression is the one thing I would have wanted as an extra on the MAckie*

*that and for it to FUCKING WORK!

    but anyway.

  • black look blacker and white look whiter.

i'm reading this in q-tip's voice.

  • Does anyone use Office for Mac 2011 and does it do Outlook Anywhere over HTTPS (used to be called RPC over HTTP)?

  • So I got my Mac back from being fixed today and went to do a time machine backup and it says my hdd is too full. Had a look in the finder and it seems that time machine is making another folder inside the backups.backupdb folder and doing the whole big first back up thing again rather than just updating the backups that already exist.

    Any ideas?

  • what did they fix?

  • New logic board.

Done a bit of googling and it's because the MAC address has changed.

I could fanny about with loads of patches that according to what I'm reading don't seem entirely reliable or I could just start again.

    I'm choosing the latter.

  • yeah if you haven't lost any data that's in a previous backup then just scrap it and start from scratch.

  • Shouldn't have lost anything that I didn't want to.

Queue a harddrive failure whilst I'm backing up.

I have another 2 time machine drives though so will do them one at a time.

Sort of makes me question the usefulness of TM though, I had thought that if this mac went completely tits up then I could get a new one, hook up my time machine drive and have all my stuff back, doesn't seem like that'd really work though.

  • you can do that.

should you ever need to get a new mac, during the initial setup menus there is an option to restore it from a time machine backup.

In fact that's exactly what i did when transferring from old to new macbooks. Some stuff does go a little weird, especially if you're changing operating systems, but it does work.

Most of the problems with time machine stem from changing components within the same computer.

  • Ah ok, makes sense.

  • qwe

  • is it worth upgrading to lion yet? have the compatibility issues been sorted?

  • is it worth upgrading to lion yet? have the compatibility issues been sorted?

I have Lion on my iMac and Air and they both run very nicely. There were a couple of fairly major useability bugs when released but they seem to have been addressed in the last update...

  • Quick bit of advice needed from folks, interested in hearing what Hael or Jono have to say on the matter (no offence anyone else- and I miss your great JM icon Jono) as I know for a fact Hael is dead wise in these matters and Jono appears to be too, anyway, enough waffle...

I have limited desk space and an even smaller wallet, my "vintage" MBP is not enjoying being constantly plugged and unplugged into the numerous HD's, ACD's and speakers, I'm thinking replacing it with the latest Mac Mini, just the base one, and pop in some extra ram... It would be used for all types of design work inc some very limited video work.

You think it will cope or is there anything I need to know which makes it useless for such tasks?
I'm kinda expecting a reply like "no, the mini doesn't utilise hyper core plus threading in its themo's so can't run PS filters on an ACD" or something similarly over my head....
    Cheers!

  • to my knowledge (not on the same level as Jono and Hael) a Mac Mini would be fine for the kind of work you're talking about - though you would need to upgrade the RAM (after purchase - don't buy ram from Apple, I'm sure you know this).

FWIW the general specs on the basic mini are better than they are on my 1.5 year old MBP - not to mention a 500gb HD - I spend plenty of time doing design work on this computer and it holds up fine, it only gets funny about large 300 dpi image files.

That said there is a big gulf between this and my iMac in the studio, but that does have 8gb of ram in - however, at the end of the day computer 'speed' is a relative thing that erodes over time. I thought this computer was fast when I got it (compared to my g4 PB), I no longer think that

what about rosetta and all that?

  • Traded in my wireless keyboard (£50) and wireless mouse (£57)..... bring back usb cables! FUCK YEAH...+ Keypad + 2 extra USB ports (£40)

    So much better.

  • Cheers Dan... thats pretty much what I thought... I think my MBP is 4 or so years old, not even Unibody! I'm sure even an Air would be a performance boost in comparison.. ha.

    So much better.

Wired keyboard with the keypad and usb is awesome. As for a mouse logitech all the way.

  • finally gonna sort out my backup situation.

Looking to get 2x2TB mirrored, possibly running time machine on 1tb each. Is it worth the extra monies to go usb3 / FW800? Always advocated FW for daisy chaining etc, but now when every pound saved is doubled I wonder if it's worth it?

  • I would still go for FW800... I have a WD Raid Array with FW800 and it flies along.

Unless you have a mac tower with a USB3 PCI card, I don't think any of the new macs are USB 3 compatible

  • Yes. If you are being that serious about backing up then get FW800 or ESATA (usb3 has basically died off already). TBH if you are in the realm of getting 2Tb drives then most will have FW as standard. What is the point of having a backup that is so slow and unreliable that you cannot use it?

  • good points. what made me wonder was Currys where you can get 2tb for 70 bob. Also, even though a cheap 2tb might be unreliable, having 2 mirrored should solve* that?

    *did I jinx it now?

  • If you are going to purely backup for backups sake and hopefully never need to work from it then go for it as it is super cheap and having 2 copies does allow for a fail. If you back up and leave it on the shelf then fine but be aware that if you ever need to do a restore then it will take all night!!
