Wasn't the whole point of USB-C to avoid these kinds of issues?

I have a 27" LG Ultrafine monitor - works fine plugged in to my 2021 MBP with the supplied black USB-C power/data cable.

I downgraded from a Mac Pro XDR display as the lack of a built in webcam on the XDR display was infuriating.

It was. It also appears only the LG UltraFine for Mac team attended that meeting.

There was no USB-C cable supplied so I used the one that came with my iPhone 15- wrong choice?

I connected an hp usb c dock with regular screens via displayport etc into a fresh out the box mac mini the other day and it worked perfectly.

That's not a thunderbolt cable - that's just a charging cable. It doesn't have the pins to transmit video data.

LG Ultrafine 24 and 27 were developed with Apple. Or is that what you meant?

Obviously. You need to be aware that there are about eight identical looking cables that all support different things with USB C.
You just need to closely read the specs, read the reviews to discover the specs are wrong and then buy an expensive one and hope for the best.

USB C charging cables only contain 4 wires and can only do USB 2.0 data rates, and the really cheap ones only contain 2 wires (for power). If you want to shift real data or amps you need something specific (USB 3 or Thunderbolt, depending on what your device supports. Buying the wrong one won't help you).
And there's no requirement to label the different cable types or even a unambiguous ways to refer to them.

1 meter is 0.8x cheaper than 1.8 meter.

Unless for some bizarre reason you need your macbook 1.8 meters away from your monitor.

Thunderbolt 4 is fairly new. I think the Ultrafine only needs a Thunderbolt 3 cable.

As a counterpoint, just got a new (refurbed) iPhone 13 Pro and the data transfer from old phone to new phone was seamless. Took like an hour or so to transfer the 2oogb across, and all I had to do was put in a couple of numbers for bank card verifications.
Would do again. -

Looking for some tablet advice. I am normally Android heavy but have resided myself to the fact the Pixel offering looks shit and I'm not mad keen on Samsung which has lead me to pondering over an iPad
Thanks to Microsoft Rewards over the last 3 years I can get £200 in gift cards from Apple, and my current dilemma is over one of the 9th or 10th Gen. I can also get education pricing so a 9th Gen would set me back around £169 and the 10th at £269. Is it worth just paying more at this point for the 10th? Main use would be media consumption with maybe the odd little bit of work here and there. I imagine the 9th would also be more than capable, but I can't say the look of the thing is particularly appealing.
I do also like the look of the Mini, but it seems a bit pointless...

From memory, the LG supplied cables don’t work with Apple devices. You’ll need to get a Thunderbolt 4 cable.
