  • I've not done it before so I may well be speaking out my arse, but are you able to backup the old one to an external drive using time machine and restore the new one from that backup?

Possibly too late now, but Migration assistant is a bit shit @beseku

Personally I would back up to an external drive as @mmccarthy suggests using SuperDuper! then restore that to the new one. However you'd have to use a bootable USB with MacOS and SuperDuper! on it because you can't wipe the boot drive.

This may sound like a big faff but it's less faff than migration assistant fucking it up. Ask me how I know...

  • Ha, too late!

I ran migration assistant last night and it seemed to work. only ball-ache was setting ups he new Mac once just to update to the same version of Ventura so it would work.

Not seen any issues yet, and a bit mindblown that even my development stuff, (Homebrew, Hugo, Ruby on Rails, Postgres) all seems to be working without any intervention. Only thing I actually had to do was authenticate with Lightroom and with my email servers.

Thanks @kboy and @mmccarthy for the tips.

  • Don’t have a mac, just ipad and iphone.

  • I have them backed up on a hard drive but how would I get them onto a phone?

    • standard I'm an idiot plot line -
  • Don’t know for sure but feels like it could work via iCloud. It’s like a tenner per month. Pay for the month you do the transfer, then cancel?

  • Don’t have a mac

    your problem right there

Jokes aside - iPhones etc. are really made to be used (and synced) with macs, on Windows you can do it via iTunes.
You could also sync your iPad this way.

If you don't like the idea of having iTunes be the thing that manages the content on your iOS devices then there are other ways / apps to use - back in the day VLC Media Player worked really well for me.
This lets you upload stuff (music, but also movies etc.) to your iPhone / iPad via WiFi sharing, via Dropbox, and a number of other ways.

  • Or just get a Tidal / spotify / Apple Music account like everyone else?

  • All well and good until your music suddenly disappears from them one day.

I use Spotify on a daily basis, but I've noticed quite a few songs that have just disappeared from my playlists which is a bit frustrating.

  • Anyone else using Continuity Camera for meetings? So much better than any built in webcam I've used, and deals with difficult lighting behind me really well.

I just picked up the Belkin adaptor for my monitor and it is a nice bit of kit, acts as a mount, stand and tripod mount too.

  • I've been using (and paying for) Camo which does the same thing. And yes, the video quality is ace.

  • 100% agree, just don't see a better alternative at the moment.

I often "re-find" the tracks by simply searching for them. Why this isn't managed automatically though I've no idea

I moved over to Tidal a few months ago, never had the issue there

  • I'm using my one a lot too. I 3d printed an adapter and mounted some magnets to it. Works fine but I'm going to order the Belkin one eventually as it's handy having the stand element.

It's so much better than even my new M2 Air webcam which is supposed to be the best they've put out in ages.

  • Looking for advice.

I need an iPad for entrainment / urgent Teradici remote desktop when we're travelling.

I'm not really into drawing/crisp FullHD video calls/etc as I already have 16" MBP if I'm going to work remotely.

Shall I get iPad 9th gen (£369) or iPad Air 4th gen (Apple refurb, £439)? iPad looks quite outdated and missing some useful things such as USB-C and bigger&better screen.

  • Thanks again all - after a two hour session last night using my wife’s 2014 mbp, my external drive and a very patient Apple advisor we managed to get all the music onto my phone. Subscription isn’t for me as yet (and as per the suggestion to up my cloud storage, that doesn’t work for locally uploaded music anyway) since I have some music that’s not available from those services. I’m also of the generation that still wants to own stuff, not just rent it.

  • I’m also of the generation that still wants to own stuff, not just rent it.

me too man, me too. I often regret not sticking to mp3's but hey ho.

  • Haven't used this, is apparently legal but I can't quite see how, but maybe worth a shot to permanently back up your playlists: https://exportify.wtf/

  • Similar - I'm going to invest in a Network Hard Drive that plugs into the router so I can keep all my mp3s and digital library on there, as well as work backups. That way I can stream my library via Sonos rather than pay a subscription on music I already own + new digital download purchases.

  • There's definitely such a thing for Tidal that works

  • We use an old apple airport (I think, that's my wife's area of expertise) to stream our own music, or any online content such as local radio stations that have such weak and crowded signals as to be virtually untunable.

  • If I buy a network hard drive I can use it to back up work stuff/client archive so has dual purpose.

  • Ah interesting, mostly for security if the data is otherwise lost?

  • Thanks!
For now I’m just glad I got my tunes back, but will consider this in the future.

  • Will let you know if the plan works in practice!
