  • i don’t care what it looks like, for me it’s a cheaper way of accessing the ram/processor i need without having to buy an imac with a shitty screen, an £8k mac pro or use a MBP as a main machine.
it’s a £1k saving over a MBP with likely better thermal handling.

..yea this also makes sense to me - it probably really is just good value / performance for the money.

I was just thinking it looks so clumsy that I'd rather hide it under the desk somewhere.
As opposed to the majority of apple products, which I actually enjoy looking at, like the 2019 16", the macbook air, basically all the iPhones ever, etc.
I even liked the trashcan, they dared to make a statement.

    First world problems of course..

  • Oh, rose gold too.

maybe it would actually look cool in a stealth black finish like that macbook from 2007 🧐

  • It's an ugly object. Mini appeared in 2005/2006 and it isn't a design classic that has kept the look because it was so good originally. It's just a box with rounded edges.

  • it’s a £1k saving over a MBP with likely better thermal handling.

Is that the matched spec price diff. Not too bad value then.

I'm still sure they could have put the base model in the mac mini box with no negative effects.

  • Waiting for mine to arrive now. A long wait.......

Went for the base model + 1tb ssd. It's already a lot more powerful than the Mac Pro so fingers crossed it's the right choice.

I'm going to hide it in a dark corner of my desk.

  • I ordered one too.. went for the ultra with 48 gpu cores. Feel like this is the Mac that I’ve always been wishing for, can finally retire my hackintosh.

I’m kinda into the design, it’s simple, at the end of the day feel like what is inside is more important

  • I'm already thinking I should have ordered the Ultra!

Really long wait based on the delivery range I was seeing.

  • I'm already thinking I should have ordered the Ultra!

    But... £4k

    I'm temped by the Max

  • In 2010 I paid £5k for the Mac Pro 6 core with 512mb SSD. £4k for the Ultra is pretty decent in comparison. I don't think I need it but I want it. The £1800 difference and longer wait was enough to put me off.

If I was looking for a bargain I'd be waiting for the Mac Mini M1's to start coming up second hand later in the month.

  • The slippery slope of getting a mac...

    16" MBP, M1pro, 16GB, 1tb ssd - £2599. Already decided on this one mentally

But then... another £500 gives me m1max, 32gb. Sounds reasonable.

And while we're there, another £400 and I get 64gb. Also reasonable, while we're at it.

But then we're at £3299! Not reasonable. Unless I use it for 5 years. Then it's cheap.

  • Classic slippery slope.

  • Any designers here working on the news MacBook Pro’s? Is the m1max overkill even for heavy photoshop work? I’m working 5gb+ files quite often but I assume that won’t be a problem for even the basic spec MBP?

  • most of the "creative" softbois on here would be best served by a £1k Mac Pro 6.1 from 2013 tbh

  • I'm powering through this month's projects on a 1.3 GHz 12" MacBook from early 2016 right now. It would likely be more fun on something with an m1 in in tho.

  • exactly! I needed a 'work' machine so I could stop using my personal laptop and I feel NO diff between 5 year old MBP and a 2nd hand M1 mac mini I bought to replace it

  • 300dpi tho, you might actually need one

  • still the desktop machine in the study that I never get to use since the missus took it over for WFH purposes.

  • Come on. Stop being so realistic.

  • I do all my work on a 2015 MacBook Pro 13 I bought for 800€ last year. It’s perfectly capable and just what I need.

I’m wondering if I can justify that screen though. I can claim the VAT back nowadays.

  • yeah!
10yr old MB with lovely antiglare screen here, save the 6.1 mac pro for fancy days / client paying

  • I wouldn’t personally use an OS which has the latest security update in 2019.

  • noted, sadly nothing interesting on this one to steal

  • When you have tons of programs running simultaneously the M1 should start to make a bit more sense. Running Logic is not going to stress it but Logic + Ableton + Rekordbox + Browsers, Spreadsheets, Documents, Mail, Plex, Roon, Darktable etc. or much much worse load.

That kind of load should be the reason for the processors we're seeing now.

  • The M1 is probably going to be a lot quieter when it does some processing.

  • This is me, but in design. Most days see me running PS, XD, sketch at the same time. All with a number of heavy and complex files open in each. Plus all the other stuff - browser, emails, slack, excel, etc. Sure I can close and open apps but why?

    Mid spec MBP it is
