Not Macbook but I do it with another laptop with the same power requirements.
It's another of those annoying situations where you need a specific USB-C cable even though they all look exactly the same.

My dell ultrasharp monitor powers my MacBook
-
• #18979
okay, makes sense, do you have a link to a cable that does the job?
I'd assume the one that came with it would have been suitable, but who knows?
@Tenderloin what Wattage is your monitor able to power? -
• #18980
so something like this, but from a more reputable/reliable brand

I achieved this with a Dell dock, it has its own power brick. 1 cable into macbook that did it all.

The one that came with my monitor worked so I haven't had to buy a separate one. Others I've tried, even ones that work for data and charging ,don't. My monitor can power 100W.

I don't have any LG app (or any monitor app) installed on this Mac, and it works fine; I thought it was standard Mac OS behaviour?
-
• #18985
Do you have the lg 5k? If so it’s the one non apple monitor that supports it

Yes I do, so I am probably being stupid. Sorry folks.

I unfortunately don't know much about Macs, but my wife needs to get a replacement laptop because she's given notice at her job and had been using the work 2013 MBP for her own projects, and has only ever bought Apple laptops. She needs it for some video editing and probably live streaming for private classes she's running, which she's previously done with a capture card, a mirrorless camera and a wireless mic. She's looking to get refurbished but is willing to spend up to around £700 if she thinks she'll get a good few years out of it. Will she be OK with a slightly newer (than 2013) MBP or is it worth a little extra for e.g. an M1 Air? Are the butterfly keyboards really as awful as Reddit claims they are?

More people had problems with the butterfly ones compared to the others.. personally, if I were to use the laptop outside a lot I would be concerned (the main problem is dust etc.) but inside / if you keep it tidy it's a non-issue as far as I'm aware.
I actually like the very short key-travel and the "hard" feel of typing on them; they really are quite a bit louder compared to the other types, this can annoy others.Performance-wise I'd say it would be a smart move to get a M1, they are just a lot more efficient / powerful than the old ones.

Seems like they had a 2019 MBP which would be suitable.
Anything you get will be better than the 2013 she's giving back. Only issue with getting a newer model is having to buy adaptors/cables for usb-c, which will make it a bit of a faff to get everything connected to begin with. If you can get one of the M1 Air's I'd go for it.
Edit: Seems hoxton mac's have one for £730

Cheers, hadn't seen Hoxton Macs before and she likes that price!

A friend recommended it to me, and I was going to purchase mine from there until I saw a similar spec one, cheaper on ebay (via a currys outlet)

is there a good central london alternative to getting my 12 mini screen replaced? or should i just pay apple £200.
-
• #18996
Feels weird to be excited about the apple event tomorrow in this day and age, but it's been new computer time for a long time. Think it's fair to expect something new laptop wise tomorrow?
-
• #18997
I think new MBAs are on the cards and maybe a new Mac Mini
-
• #18998
Mac Studio looks sick ey. No use to me, but proper cool. Apple chips are wild.
-
• #18999
I will get one but not if it’s north of 3k.
will get a cheaper MBP now 1tb/32gb not 2tb/64gb maybe even just a 14im and the Studio later.
was going for a spicy laptop spec as it’s mostly used at home with Eizo/wacom/keyboard but a studio can now do the heavy lifting.the screens i have no interest in, sure they will look nice on the reception desks of agencies though.

Some impressive stuff. Feel like there's a big gap between a mini with a M1 and the studio though.
Not sure what I was hoping for tbh. Think I'll sell my 2018 mini and go for a mid level 16" MBP
you need the proper cable. The one that comes with a power supply will not do the video.
