  • They've fucked up cables properly haven't they. Heaps of different standards with little or no visual way to tell cables apart.

    Also just read this

    https://daringfireball.net/linked/2021/12/30/tft-central-hdmi-2-1

    🤯

  • That’s good to hear, it’s got all the connectivity options I currently need in a smaller form and having the option to run an Ethernet cable when downloading or uploading big files has been a lifesaver a couple of times..

  • We've had some issues with the "dangling" ones at work with at least 4 relatively new MPBs needing new boards after some unspecified USB-C port failure. Where someone was plugging directly into a "normal" style dock (big block on desk) or directly into a monitor, we have had zero failures of that type. It might be coincidence but the ones like you linked are classified as "travel only" now, not daily use.

That said, my travel one looks like this as mine was one of the ones that popped.

  • Ahhh not the Apple Ultrafines then.

Yes, they're not the Apple ones, just the normal Ultrafines. The Apple ones were discontinued earlier in the year and I couldn't find any anywhere. I think stock was already gone by the time they pulled them from the Apple store.

  • In related news / following up on the projector question a few pages back -
was happy to see that this Acer one I got came with a WiFi-stick, and that this actually just works, right out the box (pointing the Mac to the projector's wireless network, and then just turning on AirPlay).

  • Which one did you buy?
I'm constantly trying to resist buying a projector.

  • Anyone know someone who’s after an old Mac Pro? I really don’t want to have to consign mine to the loft and can’t think of a good use for it other than massive nas drive that I don’t need.

  • What are the specs?

  • Here

You may recognise the graphics card ;-)

  • Ha, it is tempting, although I have no need for it...

  • Which one did you buy?

    This one.

  • Just tried to look at the projectors on the Currys website - saw a video showing a laser projector in action and wanted to see how it worked, 3 adverts, I gave up half way through the third and closed the tab. Sort your colleagues out bmx boy.

  • Did you rage quit again?
I don’t work at curry’s anyway, no rudimentary grasp of Latin means I’m unqualified.

  • You don't work wherever you work but that's another matter.

  • no rudimentary grasp of Latin means I’m unqualified

    Partridge-based #rep

  • Came downstairs to find the kids had helped themselves to cereal this morning and sat the youngest clumsiest one down next to my M1 Pro.

Dodged a bullet this time around but it did make me realise I forgot to take out apple care on this device.
    Any recommendations for insurance ?

  • House insurance?

  • Think you can add Apple care 60 days after purchase. Sounds like a good investment :)

  • I didnt think apple care covered accidental damage tbh

  • AppleCare+ for Mac is an insurance plan that provides expert technical support and additional hardware coverage from Apple, including up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months, each subject to an excess fee of £79 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or £229 for other damage.

I'd just put the laptop well out of reach of small people and take the risk

  • Ah didnt realise they had a plus version, they only had the one for the extended warranty last time i bought iy for my mac. Quite good as its not that much. I have gadget insurance with my bank but its max cover is 1500 quid so they won't cover my MacBook. Useless.

  • Safari on new iOS - when click a link in an email or whatsapp, the new tab is at the end of my tabs rather than next to the tab I was last on which is driving me nuts. Can I change this back to open next to my old tab?

  • I have the tech pack from barclays (as that's my bank). It's not cheap (used to be cheaper) but it covers a bunch of devices and they've fixed an ipad and apple watch no problems, and I'm about to send them a phone.

  • My only issue is the max coverage on something is £1500 so you can put a MacBook on it.
