  • Talking about a PC in the Mac thread? 🤯

All good. The PC is feeling a bit neglected as I haven’t turned it on in over a month now, WFH means when I finish work, I don’t have any desire to do any more intensive screen base stuff. Besides, all my short courses got paused (that was the main reason for the build 🤷🏻‍♀️)

How are you? How’s work and life and everything?

Got a new 2020 MBP 13-inch coming in a few weeks so that’s quite exciting. Only the i7 with 16GB and 500GB, never really see the point in maxing the specs on a laptop, but that’s just my personal opinion.

  • Ah I see! Well I’m the same, also went with the US English keyboard layout.

  • Thank you @Soul and @ExTra for your feedback; have just ordered one and will report back once I've used it for a while.
    ✌️

  • Anyone interested in a Samung T5 externall ssd drive (500Gb)? It's been sat in a drawer for ages and not used... they're around ÂŁ90 new so ÂŁ55 posted?

  • Has anyone been to an Apple Store in London since they have reopen? I need to get my laptop fixed but I am worried about the 2nd lockdown which might mean I can’t get my laptop back for weeks. Anyone know / remember if customers were given anytime to get their laptops, fixed or not, before they closed in March?

  • huh? 2nd lockdown is only leicester and surrounding villages

  • I know, but it’ll be a matter of time for the rest of the country, London seems to be doing OK though so maybe it won’t come to that.

I hope I am wrong, but when pubs are open this weekend... God bless us all!

  • Also trying to get an appointment at the Apple store have always been difficult so by the time I get an appointment, it might be a few weeks.

Has anyone use MR Systems? I heard they are good?

  • when pubs are open this weekend...

    Hello second wave!

Same here in Sweden. Midsummer last weekend so lots of gatherings. I'd be surprised if cases doesn't start to pick up this week when the usual incubation time has passed

  • I literally just got my MacBook Pro battery replaced by them. It took a good week to get done but they picked it up and delivered it so I didn't even need to leave the house. Luckily it was covered by Applecare because they charge a lot. If you don't have Applecare I'd recommend going direct to Apple when they're open.

  • Which MR Systems did you go to?

Re Apple Store, they are open now, are they?

Mine is the screen staingate issue but my AppleCare has expired, but it is covered by their recall programme or whatever they call it.

Not sure if I can get it picked up and delivered for free.

  • Islington, but I never actually went there physically.

The apple store is open but it doesn't look like the genius bar is, when trying to book in a hardware repair I get "This location has no available reservations".

MR have a web chat, you can ask in there if they'll do it for free under the recall program. I didn't pay anything including the pick up and drop off. Otherwise it's like ÂŁ85 diagnosis fee and ÂŁ100 labour fee plus the cost of any parts.

  • I just tried and it seems like they have limited appointments, but if MR systems can do pick up and delivery then that's even better. Will contact them. Thanks.

  • Anyone know of any LaCie dealers or anyone whose good at hard drive diagnosis? Got two LaCie d2 external hard drives which don’t seem to want to power up. Can’t see them on the desktop and led isnt lighting up. Not sure if it’s cables/power supply or issue with the hdd itself..

  • Don't they screw apart? Maybe you can get the hdd's out yourself and try with a usb to sata cable?

i've done it a few time to diagnose drives

  • I find those USB cables sometimes lack power for 3.5" spinning drives so I use something like this

You sometimes need to cover a tab over or similar to get the drives working once they are out of the enclosure.

@cornelius_blackfoot are the drives USB powered or separate mains power? If the former then the obvious first step would be they're not getting enough power. A powered USB hub can help to check that.

  • thanks @kboy and @aggi they do come apart, not sure how difficult it is to extract the hard drive from the casing. But will look into that at a later date.
Going to concentrate on cables and power supply, seems weird that they're not powering on at all. These are the drives.

brought off ebay so not sure about warranty, contacting the sellers now..

  • Thanks for doing the heavy googling for me..

  • Anything to avoid todays mundane work!

  • Does anyone have an Apple Magic mouse they want rid of? My one has given up. Even an old wired one would be fine.

  • I think I have a battery wireless one and a wired one in my spares box. Will have a look in the morning. Where about are you?

  • I’m up in Enfield but I cycle central most days. I’m happy to make a detour to pretty much anywhere if needed.

  • Cool. So I have a wired one, not sure if that's what you want? You can have it for free. It's basically new, got a few marks due to storage.

I also have a new rechargable wireless one in the office, the battery one is probably there too, but we are not allowed back till at least end of Aug, so I can let you know if you are still interested then.

As for meeting up, I am going pass LookMum tomorrow shortly before and after 5pm (haircut nearby)

I am also going to the Apple Store in Covent Garden mid morning next Fri 10 July.

Otherwise, I am in Camberwell, so probably not worth your while coming all the way. Could also post, maybe a couple of quids postage?

  • For those who need an Apple Store appointments for repair, they are booking a week in advance only, so this Mon for next Mon, this Tue for next Tue etc etc. They seem to be releasing new appointments just before mid day. Only seems to be a dozen a day per a store.
