  • Really stupid basic question, please can someone help! Basically imported some photos to a mac from a DSLR but not to photos; they are just in a normal folder. I have deleted some of them, and wherever there was a deleted photo, there is a now a gap. They're all in chronological order still so didn't want to change anything on the sort by section.

  • I use a henge stone dock for my USB c MacBook but it’s a pricey fucker

  • I'm still stuck in the past on 10.7 so maybe things have changed but I think you ought to be able to open the terminal (from the menu bar) and type "resetpassword".

There also used to be a way to do it starting up in single user mode if that doesn't work

  • Sorry not sure if I understand you question? You have deleted some pics by accident or you wanted to delete those pics?

If you have deleted the pics by accident and then emptied the trash then you’d have to recover them and it’s not an easy task.

If you just want to get rid of the gap on your folder then just rearrange them by name then your 5873 would appear next to 5867 and the rest would just follow. Or change your viewing option on the top bar.

The file names from your camera are assigned chronologically so for example, 0001 would be pic no.1 taken at 08:05 and 0002 would be pic no.2 taken at 08:06 and 0010 would be pic no.3 taken at 08:1... If you delete 0002 and rearrange your pics by name, 0010 would then be pic no.2.

Is that what you are asking?

  • Any in any case, I wouldn’t use Photos anyway, their filing and folders system is a pain at the back side...

  • @ExTra Thanks very much. Sort by name worked, I should have thought of that.

Also completely agree ref photos, especially being newish to mac from windows and being an android user. I haven't invested time in playing with it but it amalgamates all my photos into one big thing and makes things like attaching a photo to an email much harder than a file (IMO).

  • If you deal with a lot of pics then it might be worth spending half an hour or so to learn the filing system and how you could export the pics from the Photos app, which is stupid really because the whole idea to offload the pics onto a computer is for safe keep and send onto people.... once you have imported your pics onto Photos, you’d have to export them from Photos or know where the original folders are which I can never remember... if you just drag the thumbnails from Photos like you would a normal file from a normal folder, then they are basically very small preview... something that our students do all the time! It is annoying!

  • You can easily sort your pics by time and date in Photos, you can create folders within Photos as well... but still it is annoying... the only time I use Photos is to download pics from my iPhone because I don’t have a choice but as soon as it’s done, I immediately export all the pics just because Photos is annoying and I have Lightroom to organise my pics... 😁

  • Nah photos is ok. It helps you organise shit.

Apple want you to share stuff with their cloud album feature.

  • If you have two usb-c monitors of which one delivers enough downstream to charge your macbook you won’t need a hub type device. Just plug each screen in to the MacBook.

Get a decent external drive - don’t skimp if using it to back up or store personal stuff.

  • I hate the way my Mac deals with photographs- just let me have the fucking file!

  • Can't you just have the fucking files in some folder,
and use some fucking image viewer to fucking look at it?

  • Nope, Photo app grabs any photographic file and hoards it like Smaug

  • It doesn’t, not exactly anyway. You can move / remove the folders just like any other folder but they are well hidden and there are a lot of clicks and right clicks before you get there.

And except for iPhone and iPad, when downloading your pics, you can just treat your cameras like a USB stick, no need to use the Photos app.

  • Image Capture gets you a bit closer to the raw files IIRC.

I like the way I ask Photos to show me all the pictures of bicycles and it will just do it.

  • Cheers for the help. The machine is a MacBook Pro 2014, I think. I’ve decided im going to wipe it and start fresh as my father in law says there’s nothing on it he cares about.

I should be able to format and install everything from scratch?

    Cheers

Would something like this work? I.e. I have a charger plugged into the hub all the time I just connect the hub to the laptop with one cable?

  • If you can afford a HyperDrive then I highly recommend them. They sell some on Amazon.

  • @ExTra thanks! Am planning on sorting out a load of photos over the summer and learning how to do it properly. Only have a small SSD so want to keep stuff in the cloud neatly in folders / on an external hdd that I can move between PC and mac with.

  • They look pretty awesome - ta!

  • For leaving travelling, I’m tired of having a million cables, chargers and adaptors and saw the Plug Bug Duo

    https://store.apple.com/uk/xc/product/HMJK2ZM/A

It looks pretty ideal but would be keen for a slightly cheaper piece of kit with a couple of more USB points. I’m also I little concerned as it’s so bulk it won’t fit in every socket especially if it’s very close to the floor.

  • When they make one with USBC ports instead of usb a I'm all over it

  • I’m also I little concerned as it’s so bulk it won’t fit in every socket especially if it’s very close to the floor.

    Flip it?

  • That works for countries with vertically symmetrical plugs (the US and most of mainland Europe) but countries like Australia and the UK you can't just flip it up.

  • I’m also I little concerned as it’s so bulk it won’t fit in every socket especially if it’s very close to the floor.

Hopefully GaN tech will hurry up and make these huge chargers a problem of the past.

I’m using Anker’s PowerPort Atom PD 1 which is tiny. Their PowerPort Atom PD 2 doesn’t seem to be available in the UK yet but is out in the US:

    This RAVPower one too:

Never thought I’d write a post about chargers. #livingmybestlife
