  • Whats probably the oldest year / model laptop i could get away with doing HD/4k video editing and After effects? thinking good condition 2014?

  • I edit HD and 4k to HD Pro Res on a 2010 i7 macbook pro with 16gb ram and SSD.

I also use Photoshop for heavy layer tasks and illustrator too sometimes and its fine, keep saying I'm gonna upgrade but will when it finally dies.

  • Really? is this an issue given that macbook isnt retina display, are you able to guage the vids full quality OK

  • Yep. Not all at once - can still see all the pixels, just maybe not full screen (i.e. the player will extend beyond your screen resolution so you need to drag it around with a non Retina machine). I'm not using a 2010 but that should be more than capable. When I'm on location I bring a 2013 retina 13inch with no fancy upgrades apart from the ssd - literally bog standard base unit and I can easily do simple edits. Renders may be a bit longer and playing back 8k redcode footage is a bit of a struggle! But it does the job. Especially if you set preview quality on your NLE (i.e. Premiere) down.

You'll be able to edit on just about anything. Playback is the only thing that may struggle but 4K shouldn't be a problem so long as the files are local (I find even via Thunderbolt playing back 4k, from an FS7 for example, is very stuttery compared to storing locally).

  • Cool, basically on my Air rendering time is my main issue atm, overall speed is meh playback is good/ok but not amazing.

Im such a novice at Macs - if my budget is say £500 what are the main metrics should i be looking at in looking for a 2nd hand macbook for Video editing. Memory RAM higher than 4gb which i have now I imagine? etc

  • that is very impressive tbf

  • Hey fellow mac heads,

Got a 13" Macbook Pro (if I remember correctly it is from June 2012) for which I replaced hard drive maybe 3 years ago (last one was broken), and doubled RAM memory (not sure if it was 4 to 8 Gb or 8 to 16 Gb but almost sure it was 4 to 8 Gb).

The computer is performing well for what I do (mostly internet searches, films, etc.) ; however, I am wondering if switching to a SSD would drastically change the computer behavior (and if it is really worth it).

Moreover, it is without a doubt a stupid question but I assume that improving the computer (with a SSD for example) will not have any impact on internet speed (I mean for example interactions on chrome or other applications internet-related)?

  • replacing the CD drive with an SSD and porting the OS etc onto that will make it run significantly faster

  • ^ this

improving the computer (with a SSD for example) will not have any impact on internet speed (I mean for example interactions on chrome or other applications internet-related)?

    no, not really

  • My question sounded really stupid when I read it again and was certainly badly built but I was quite convinced of the answer that you gave even before posting it anyway

    Thank you and @swedeee !

  • I have a 2017 12.9” version, could sell as I’ve basically never used it. (Bought for a project that was abandoned). The pencil thing is cool from what Ive seen

  • Potentially interested, what kind of monies?

  • System files seem to be taking excessively huge amount of space on SSD (88.01GB out of 250GB) Is this normal for a Sierra 10.12? Is OmniDiskSweeper trustworthy?

  • I use OmniDiskSweeper, it's good.

  • Can someone recommend a site to talk about old imac mods?

  • ummm what have you got in mind? I’m doing a SSD replacement in a mid-2011 27” tomorrow for shits/giggles. Using one of the OWC/MacSales vids on YouTube?
Mods on an iMac is like mods to a toaster. Your options are pretty limited : )

  • I still mean to turn an old MacPlus into a Macquarium... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macquarium ...some day.

  • Have a couple of old 2008/09 imacs so should be able to go 64bit. Use for some general surfing

  • Anyone wants a leather case for their iPhone X? In grey. It doesn't hold 3 cards I don't think, but 2 is ok.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Leather-Silhouette-Japanese-Protective-Grey/dp/B075NDC9KR/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1516403889&sr=8-5&keywords=mujjo+iphone+x

I bought this before Chirstmas and it arrived with a couple of scuff marks so the company has kindly sent me another one. So this is never used and up for grab at £35ovno

Pick up SE1 or there about.

  • Looks like you do now - it's known malware and can install without you knowing. Kill with fire.
