  • In terms of applications for work I would have Outlook and multiple PowerPoint decks, all of which would be in varying states of edit. In terms of applications for home that would be potentially something for basic photo editing, and possibly sticking together GoPro files - my current MBA can't handle this so I don't do it.

Other than that a web browser with a lot of tabs- and everything running over a VPN.

  • Might be worth checking benchmarks for your air and the MacBooks, I have a feeling there will not be a lot in it. Maybe the newly reduced base pro would be a better option?

  • how much for your current MBA?

  • My current MBA is fairly weedy- 4 gig of RAM from memory, not sure on the processor. Many tabs open in a browser cause it to slow noticeably.

  • Most phones have that much ram.

  • Home now, it's an early 2014 with a 1.4 Ghz i5 and 4 GB of RAM.

  • Another update on screen replacement. Had it changed today, they messaged me when the part had arrived and they fitted it in 20mins. Excellent service. I went to MR in Islington for anyone interested.

  • I'm gonna buy an iMac Pro with extra jizz.

  • How much extra do they charge for that?

  • PowerPoint decks, all of which would be in varying states of edit.

I'd be looking at the MBP then. PowerPoint always runs like a dog, even on good machines. With mac I always spend the absolute max of my budget. This has generally staved off upgrading every two years. Current MBP is late 2013 and still strong. Good value and glad I specced it to the max at purchase.

  • The size advantage of the MacBook over the MBP is significant.

  • True, but that doesn't make the 13" a big or heavy machine. I think the extra power and ports wins it hands down, but depends on what you need of course.

For powerpoint though, you gonna need heaps of power, that thing eats resources.

  • Is the Apple variant better from that perspective? A little worried about the compatibility issues that may occur.

  • keynote is far better .. but your company/employer might not like it

  • Doesn't Keynote open PP files? It's miles better...

  • It's my laptop, my employer doesn't get a say in what applications I use on it, as long as I can build slide decks and share said decks with colleagues who have PowerPoint without FUBARing the formatting then that's fine.

  • share said decks with colleagues who have PowerPoint without FUBARing the formatting then that's fine.

Nah, that won't happen. Its not about the machine, its the file format. Keynote > PP and vice versa ALWAYS fucks things up.

  • Boo

  • I've actually found keynote to be unstable and random thing will make it hang.

Stick to Pp if that's what you know but it can get slow. Especially with imported graphics and excel things like worksheets or charts generated by other ms apps.

I forgot about the size requirements but I really think MBP is better long term.

Out of interest, have you considered any windows laptops? Or even a surface pro?

  • Surface Pro's are basically just Macbooks that run windows these days anyway.

  • If they make Sketch for windows I can kiss goodbye to apple forever as OSX is the last bit of apple left in my life

  • Yep, but they're really good. I spent a day running one as a drawing tablet. Was impressed. Quite taken by the big desktop surface too. If only it had more grunt. Windows os didn't even get in the way.

  • you make me sad.
