  • better get a new mac though just in case.

  • My gen1 hasn't missed a beat with anything I've thrown at it in the last year, so I haven't felt the need for 'more'. But I did make sure to get one of the heavier-hitting ones. Work has been large, image-heavy indesign docs, mid-weight illustrator work and batching stuff in PS. I can't see it failing me in the next 12 months either really. Conversely, the Apple wisdom of always buying the best you can probably applies.

  • No there wasn't an issue with mine, there was just a ruler on the magic mouse in the other room haha

  • If it is yahoo mail (or similar) you might need to log in to yahoo directly in a browser. Periodically I have to do this, for reasons I can't be bothered to work out.

  • Conversely, the Apple wisdom of always buying the best you can probably applies.

Which is £1,684 currently. Would you say it's worth that money?

  • Oooff no, I'd get a pro at that price point. I paid just over 1k for mine which keeps it at the novelty/plaything end of the spectrum so I don't feel bad throwing it around. In terms of value, I'd say this one hits the right balance of power and price (refurb). I prioritise oomph over storage as everything I need ready access to is cloud-based, your needs might be different.

  • 90% of what I do is "as a service", so yes - oomph over storage.

  • I paid just over 1k for mine which keeps it at the novelty/plaything end of the spectrum

    :-0

  • Hummmmm..... Thanks mate. :-)

  • I just popped into the Apple Store, the base MacBook and MacBook Pro 13" are really very similar form-wise. Why would one go non-pro unless chasing the last word in weight and size?

  • Pretty much this - weight and size. The pro is a fair bit heavier though...

Oh man I miss my air, I hope whoever stole it has broken it by now.

  • Typical workload for me would be a VPN running into our corporate network, Outlook, Excel (sometimes), PowerPoint (a lot), and then a load of browser windows- some internal services, some external such as Salesforce. Nothing taxing, but that said multiple browser windows cause my Air to go at a crawl (4Gb RAM), so as to be practically unusable.

    So! MacBook or MacBook Pro?

From a personal standpoint I'm likely to use it to edit or simply mess around with Photographs, and if I ever charge my GoPro again to assemble short video clips to upload to YouTube.

  • TBH, sound like normal MacBook work fine for you.

  • I love the MacBooks but see them as back up/secondary machines... a non touch bar MBP has a fair bit more power than a similar priced MacBook...

  • But if I don't need the power presumably it's just more weight and faster battery drain?

  • I think the power difference is pretty massive. If I was spending over 1200 on a MacBook I'd prob just drop some more for a MacBook Pro. Especially if it's my only machine. I love MacBooks but wouldn't over invest in one. I'm quite hard on machines though and find all laptops a wee bit under powered.

  • Ok, to settle this- which would be better for Zwift?

  • Pro

  • Reminds me of the Elago W3 stand for apple watch

  • I feel this may be getting out of hand and will therefore go nowhere, however: http://boutique.heathrow.com/technology/apple-macbook-pro-13-with-retina-display-touch-bar-detail

(for those who don't want to click the price is £1,569 for what is £1,749 in the Covent Garden Apple Store currently).

I'm flying to the US soon, this is 10% off Apple Store- something of a pisstake given it's meant to be VAT free, which would be 20% but there you go.

Buy it in the US and it's $1,799 plus sales tax, which (less sales tax as I never know what it is) would be £1,445

  • Buy it in the US and you also get the Enter key of doom.

  • half sized enter key to make you hit backslash all the damn time.
