Photo Of The Day

This image taken Jan. 30 and received on Earth today by our Cassini spacecraft is of Saturn's moon Mimas. Less than 123 miles (198 km) in mean radius, crater-covered Mimas is the smallest and innermost of Saturn's major moons. It is not quite big enough to hold a round shape, so it is somewhat ovoid with dimensions of 129 x 122 x 119 (miles 207 x 197 x 191 km, respectively). Its low density suggests that it consists almost entirely of water ice, which is the only substance ever detected on Mimas. Most of the Mimas surface is saturated with impact craters ranging in size up to greater than 25 miles (40 km) in diameter.

Harlem Gang Leader, 1948 - Gordon Parks

The first story that Parks proposed to Life magazine was a piece on the gang wars that were consuming Harlem in the late 1940s. These Harlem photographs reflect Parks' ambition to depict Harlem's brutality by presenting Red Jackson, a young Harlem gang leader, along with his gang's members, in quiet, contemplative moments, as well as the intensity of street brawls. The photographs Parks shot were published in a photo essay, "Harlem Gang Leader", in Life's November 1, 1948 issue.

The Prayer

This shot was taken in Bucovina, Romania. Paraschiva is an 80 years old woman who lives in a house of hills. There is no electricity and she can read the prayer with no glasses at the candle light. Beautiful and simple life!
