You should check the forecasts before you burst too much - I was in Iceland for 4 months and saw none.

My GF and I booked flights ages ago while both sat in the sweltering tropics on opposite sides of the world... We forgot to consider that it might be winter, but frankly just then any place with "ice" in the name sounded appealing. I'm starting more detailed planning in the next couple of days (and will doubtless post for advice), but I'm guessing that since you didn't see any you don't have any aurora spotting tips?

Check the long-range Aurora forecasts, and rent a car. Everything in Iceland is a day trip.
October is reasonably lengthed days I think, and should be pretty autumnal.

Joanna Lumley made a tv programme about hunting for the Northern Lights, it's on youtube.
I went to Lapland for 5 days in mid-winter and saw nothing. I didn't try that hard though, just popped my head out of the yurt once an hour to see if there was anything in the sky then retreated back into the warmth.

A macro photo of a waterbear on moss. Tardigrades, commonly known as waterbears or moss piglets, are water-dwelling, segmented creatures with eight legs and measuring just 1mm in length. They are found throughout the world, including regions of extreme temperature, such as hot springs. They can survive extreme pressure, such as deep underwater. They can also survive high levels of radiation and can live in the vacuum of space for several days.

Not too sure if this counts for Photo of the Day but it brings a smile to my face every time I see it. Local Leeds rider took a series of "profile" shots of some of the strays of Hollywood on the Boulevard when he was out there recently. There's a few more shots from the egocentric town if you click on the image.
