  • A man takes a nap on an inflatable sofa floating on a flooded street near the Yangtze River in Chongqing municipality, July 25, 2012. Torrential rain has swept through 17 provincial areas since July 20, leaving 95 dead and another 45 missing, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said on Monday. Nearly 300,000 people from nine districts and counties in China's southwest Chongqing municipality have been affected by rainstorms as of Saturday according to Xinhua News Agency.

  • This photo was taken on the ice near Arctic Bay last month. As far as we know, it is the highest latitude passenger flight on a hot air balloon ever. It was quite the sight to see a hot air balloon fly between the iceberg columns -- it is one iceberg but looks like two.

  • Facepalm guy in the opening ceremony photo is meme potential!

  • American rowers (from left to right) Scott Gault, Charlie Cole, Henrik Rummel and Glenn Ochal stand tall in front of Otay Lake at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. The team will look to win gold in the men's four rowing competition at the London Olympic Games.

The Los Angeles Times' Jay L. Clendenin was just one of many to photograph the U.S. Olympic team before its members headed to London. He was the only one to shoot dueling portraits of the athletes, using both a modern digital camera, and a 4×5-inch field camera paired with a 100+-year-old Petzval lens.

There more from the series here. Though I have to say there is some seriously dodge looking photoshoping going on the blades, i'm guessing because they didnt have they're new oars ready for the photo.

  • They're slowly popping up around London.

    Most of them don't work.
