Deep in the rainforests of the Indian state of Meghalaya, bridges are not built, they’re grown. For more than 500 years locals have guided roots and vines from the native Ficus Elastica (rubber tree) across rivers, using hollowed out trees to create root guidance systems. When the roots and vines reach the opposite bank they are allowed to take root. Some of the bridges are over 100 feet long and can support the weight of 50 people.

There was a section on this on in the BBC's 'Human Planet' I can't find a video clip atm, but there's a load more photos on their blog.

Yes, it was really quite something :) I especially enjoyed the fact that it was used in Star Trek 4 ;)

It was smaller than I was expecting. TBH, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had a little more than half a day to look about, as the folks I was with really weren't too bothered. We'd driven down the coast from SF on the same morning.

Osaka is home to the best aquarium I've been too. Spiraling down towards the ground floor around the outside of the main tank is a pretty amazing way to display fish.

Tiles - I have pics of the Spruce Goose I took 4 years ago at Evergreen Aviation outside McMinnville. Remind me and I'll bring some along to Wests the next time you're around. It's awesome in the flesh.
ha, nice to know that an impoverished 'migrant mother' nonetheless has access to high quality hair dye...
