  • Forum fav is a tado but I think from installing them they are pish.

We fit hives personally and they are fine.

  • As in tricky to install (which I’ve heard) or poor quality hardware?

  • I hate this shit about Hive: https://www.hivehome.com/shop/smart-heating/hive-plus

All features are built in the hardware but throttled because they can with a subscription model.

  • Why not just go straight to heat pump if that’s what you’re wanting to do?

  • Fiddly and the connectors imo is too small for cables

  • Never even knew they had a subscription, can still work it from your phone so what’s the things that subscription adds back in?

Everyone has this model now and it’s a fuckin joke for everything

  • There are lots of changes we want to make to the house before integrating a new heating system and we’re not ready for that yet. So I’m trying to ensure that any decisions are future proofed and flexible.

  • Everyone has this model now and it’s a fuckin joke for everything

yeah true, I actually have worse ecosystem than Hive .. Nest, I want to get rid and replace with Hive at some point

  • There is a deal on this weekend on Tado. Think they do a Black Friday thing too.
Not had any major issues with ours apart from having to work out the offset temp for the different TRV’s as we have just one thermostat in the lounge which I moved from room to room to help see the actual and indicated temps.
Not got into scheduling yet as I just tend to use the app depending on in/out and what room we are in mostly.

  • I’ve changed so many nests, see when the hub goes it’s a full new unit and you have to have it hard wired which is fine if there is a thermostat there already but your fucked if doesnt

  • Not as popular, but I have a Netatmo. Works nicely with Home Assistant, easy to install, the app is pretty straightforward (and also has a good browser interface), no subscription, easy to get your data and I've had no issues I can remember in the ten yers I've had one. You can often pick them up for cheap on ebay.

They're not as well known but they're owned by LeGrand who do that kind of stuff for industry.

A controversial view on here but I wouldn't necessarily go with smart thermostats. Apart from the aesthetic issues, when I looked at them the payback period was very long. There's also the issue whether trying to heat individual rooms using central heating is the most efficient way of doing it.

  • I’ve got a brand new unused Tado system up for grabs.

Wireless thermostat and bridge, EU version with opentherm, with 7x Tado smart TRVs.

    Lemme know if you’re interested.

  • obviously very tired

You're not coming round mine then, it looks like it's mostly in good nick to me!

  • I may well be, just checking with Tado what exactly I need

  • I mentioned a while back that I was getting the front of my house (path and yard area in front of the bay window) done.

The tiles that we are looking at for in front of the bay need to have a reinforced concrete base instead of just going on compacted MOT. Is there any potential issues with this (apart from the increased cost obviously)? Levels will be taken down a bit to ensure that it isn't breaching the damp proof course.

  • absolutely depressing. Glasgow is getting more and more of these places and the white render really doesn't age well especially in our wet climate. Awful.

  • do you know what it would cost approx to replace Nest with Hive? London based.

  • Are you planning on using the subscription part of Hive? I have it without subscription and it's really feature-limited. All I really want at the moment is to extract the daily data, but can't even do that.

  • tbh I dont know what I am doing haha

that Hive bit came across a bit like this: https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/12/23204950/bmw-subscriptions-microtransactions-heated-seats-feature

  • that Hive bit came across a bit like this

yeah exactly. So my gut feel is you should swerve it and install something less restrictive...

  • second this - Netatmo have been seamless. Can do schedules/away mode - which Hive are you getting to pay for by the looks of it

  • A really basic question, but our current analogue thermostat is wired to the wall. Does that mean I need to buy a wired Tado? Or can I repleace with a wireless version?

I had a programmer and wired thermostat. I've been too lazy to remove the thermostat (it will leave a hole in the wall) so have just turned that up to 30. The programmer was replaced with the Wireless Receiver, wired to the boiler. The starter kit I bought included a wireless thermostat which I didn't intend to use, as I have TRVs, but it turns out that a thermostat is required to switch the hot water on via the receiver.

I have the UK version as that has relays which is what I need. I think it can be switched into a mode where it will talk to a fancy modulating heat source but I've never tried that.

    Starter kit I bought: https://www.screwfix.com/p/tado-v3-black-edition-wireless-heating-hot-water-smart-thermostat-starter-kit-black/701kg

and many TRVs. I bought basic. https://www.screwfix.com/p/tado-basic-white-smart-radiator-thermostat/861kg

  • There's also the issue whether trying to heat individual rooms using central heating is the most efficient way of doing it.

When I'm working from home in the winter and everyone else is out I shut the door to my office room and only heat that room. Seems to make sense compared to heating the rest of the house for ~8 hours more. But I haven't done any maths.

  • I do this but use an electric heater in that room. I haven't run the numbers on cost but I would suspect it is pretty similar and an electric heater is twenty quid rather than hundreds of pounds on TRVs

  • I'm not sure I trust my wiring with high current loads. Should probably get that sorted but rewiring a furnished home is too much like hard work...

And TRVs give me graphs and other geek things that make me happy.
