  • Well, there are no tax implications from being given a house, as long as they don't continue to live there and they stay alive for long enough that you avoid inheritance tax.

There are also no tax implications from selling a house as long as it was your actual home.

  • if you put an asset into trust 7 years before death it becomes inheritance tax exempt

    i think

  • Moving boilers is expensive. Maybe as high as 4 figures depending on how far you want to move it. If the boiler was not relatively new it would be wise to change it at the same time too.

  • The problem with getting a home job for moving a boiler is that you probably won't be able to hold the plumber (if they are indeed a plumber) liable for the work if it goes wrong. You may want to err on the safe side and get it done "properly".

  • Not in Leytonstone. Thanks so, Phil and Kirsty.

It has the fastest-rising house prices in the UK, but it isn't easy to love Waltham Forest. Rhodri Marsden ponders the approaching cupcake ...

Most of the journalism about the gentrification of East London are patronising and snobby, that article's no exception.

  • Leyton prices actually seem to be dropping again, or at least plateauing at the moment, which is good.

  • I think we're getting the keys this week.

  • Welcome to a life of debt!
    Getting the keys this afternoon...

  • amaze!

    i hope your landlord's not a cunt.

  • Still bastard waiting

  • Not to take away from Chalfie's good news. Enjoy.

It's Lewisham council. They will be.

It doesn't have to be a lifetime of debt.

    Oh and well done!

  • No, just the vast majority of it.
    ;)
I'll be 56 when I pay mine off (at normal rate) - but I hope not to be a 56-year-old living in a flat in Downham. We'll see.

  • Thanks for reminding me. Overpay time..

  • how far off are you hippy?

  • Just a couple more pictures of apple pies.. maybe 2min...

Oh, the house thing, sorry. I'm not sure. I'd need to login to check and they've made that process almost impossible. It's still probably 10 years or something.

  • he's not very far off he's just large

  • I've been looking at trying to find a place with a garden... I'm currently E3... kinda looks like I might have missed the boat though- Leyton, Leytonstone and Walthamstow all look to have gone up daft amounts, almost getting close to E3 but they are arse end of nowhere... anyone have any tips? Thinking maybe Limehouse/Stepney Green...

  • 10 years, that'd be nice. I'm not overpaying so 22 years left.

  • E3 is really expensive which is why I decided to look in Leyton(stone). Still some cheap-ish properties there. For me, being near the Central Line is important though.

We've just instructed our solicitor to go ahead and exchange contracts for our new place in Leytonstone. He asked me and my girlfriend to decide on a Deed of Trust in case we decided to split and sell up. I'm putting up maybe 75% of the deposit and plan to over-pay the mortgage, so not sure what to agree on. Anyone else been in this situation?

  • e3 is great. why move if its only outside space you are after? youve got the park on your doorstep...

having a private/shared garden in london is a great luxury..

I remortgaged this year for lower monthlies so overpayments are limited to £500/month again. I'm not as diligent as I was and I've had a lot of other costs so I've let it slip a bit but I got some tax back so thought I should put it to good use.

  • We took on debt to boost the deposit. We have cleared that in 2 years, not the 5 planned so we kinda overpaid there ish.

I was on a nice little number contracting but now I'm not so disposable income is a thing of the past.

Congrats Rob! I am in the same situ deposit wise but the other way round... we don't have anything in place, just hoping if god forbid we do split up neither of us will be dicks.

Yeah, I do LOVE E3, I have lived here all my London life and it feels like home. My flat over looks a park but I can't help dream about a small outside space with a summer house/bike shed/ pizza oven. That sounds very grand but think more garden shed with a deck chair in.
