  • I see that it is possible, but should it be this way?
that you have to work 100hr weeks for years to get a modest home?
    its a bad joke.

    No, probably not.

But since I had to bust my balls for one so should everyone else :)

Don't some countries have huge amounts of rental versus owned and don't they work just fine? I can't remember which it was. Hmm, not a very good anecdote that is it? Fuck it, I'm tired.

  • ...or pick grapes.

    screams

  • sour grapes?

    Grapes?

    screams

  • If I had a mil to spend on a two bed flat I'd rather live here than in a glass tower block. Just my opinion though.

With you on that. My million would get me my own front door and a slightly longer commute. Each to their own.

  • My million would go towards an apple pie buffet run by midgets.

  • you couldn't afford an apple pie buffet run by midgets that would sate both your apple pie AND midget needs.

  • True, very true. #backtothedrawingboard

Germany I think? maybe France? They also have much more legislative rental controls - landlords can't bump the rent up massively, tenants get long term leases etc.

It doesn't make the anecdote much better, as I might have made that up...

  • Germany. But it's becoming increasingly less true. I spoke to a mate from Berlin and it's starting to sound like London 10 years ago. They're catching up. It'll be full-on bonkers rip-off there, too, soon.

  • No, probably not.

In Sweden the majority rent property-lots of housing associations and collectives that guarantee low rents and quality housing.

Granted, the system isn't perfect and if you want to live in the nicest areas you need to put your name on a huge waiting list, but they don't have the same attitude to profiteering off of housing stock/buy to let/raping the poor that the UK does.

  • Correct about Germany, much better protection for renters and contracts are all 2+ years

  • With you on that. My million would get me my own front door and a slightly longer commute. Each to their own.

Same here. Was really just commenting on options for two bed places in zone one for that money.

  • *envy.

    ennui

  • begrudging people because of they landed with their arse in the butter is a waste of perfectly good anger. we aren't all born equal, deal the fuck with it.

Bitching on an internet fixie skidder forum is my way of dealing with it. Deal with that!

  • furrymuff.

  • We could all just not live in London. Soon all of the classic London professions will be priced out of the capital and placedslike Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield and Bristol will have bankers, barristers, media, tech startups and even graphic designers.

    Maybe.

  • London will be a billionaires play ground. Let them have Harrods. It's shit.

  • Enjoying my London game at the moment but won't be sad to move away one day, the feeling of having disposable income to blow on cars, bitches and donuts is going to be amazing

  • The feeling of living in Birmingham won't be.

  • I was thinking more like Harpenden

  • Correct about Germany, much better protection for renters and contracts are all 2+ years

Also, AIUI in Der Sausageland you have to pay a capital gain tax on the profit of the sale of your house unless you've lived there over 10 years. Presumably this is designed to stop the quick boom and bust we see.

  • He might just want to go swinging?

  • We had our 2 bed flat valued in Dec, had another a month ago...£25k+ already

    #bonkers

  • We're moving to Enfield

    *you heard it here first

    **taps nose
