I HATE them too. Stay still for a millisecond and the wood scorches. And if you get a duff rental one, the guard scuffs up your skirting. I got much better results with an RO sander.

Im hiring another one soon, to do the dining room and hallway. Thankfully it's more of a tidy up, whereas the living room was thick black stain under the ugly carpet.
Girlfriend has already said she would like to have a go with the sander.

thick black stain
The bitumen stuff? A friend just got done dealing with that. Overstock on belts/discs, that stuff gums up or chews through them like nobody's business.
I really enjoyed using the main sander. With a decent mask and good hearing protection, it's a very zen job. Shut everyone and everything out for a few hours. Although, lugging it up to the loft room was no fun single handed, especially the narrow top staircase. It's like a 45kg 1970's vacuum cleaner.

Probably worth scraping the worst of it off first. But yeah. Can't have too many belts and discs.

How'd you find the edge Sander? That thing was such a bastard.
Wasn't so bad, you treat it like a car clutch, turn it on, turn levers to "lower" it, and gently release the sander as you move forward to bring it into contact onto the wood.
You really need to take your time and let it do the work for you.
The only problem we have is not disengaging it before hitting the wall, which show a very slight line from it, but that easily remedied.
Edit; this is the belt sander, not the edging sander;
The edging sander you gotta be careful, I ran it a little too long and it almost bonded the sandpaper onto the sander, fortunately managed to get it out.
Edging is a bit misleading cause you can't even get onto the actual corner itself, that required yet another fucking tools...

Lacquer doesn't have to be shiny...
We got Bona Mega Traffic HD which is matt. It's designed for airport floors and stuff so should do us!
If you use oil be aware that it really needs retreating every few years, whereas lacquer is good for 15-20 years IIRC. We used Osmo at our last place and it was more orangey than I'd have liked, if I had decided to use Osmo again I would have used Polyx Raw Natural which has a bit of white pigment in to keep it paler.
I'm still a big fan of Osmo but more recently have used that stuff on a desk and am going to use it on a coffee table I'm going to restore.

That's the one. I swear at times I had to change the paper every few feet.
Once all that went it wasn't too bad of a process to be honest. Despite dust bags the whole room was a cloud mind you.

The one I had came with paper bags, which seemed to filter a lot of it out. Except when I caught it on something and it ripped open, which happened more than I care to admit. Still definitely needed a decent mask.

Didn’t know there’s a paper bag version, think we got lucky as our is a fabric bag with a zip underneath.

Bought a house. It’s allotment 69 and the block is 420sqm. Nice.
Note, I live in South Australia.

You brought a house the size of a small flat?
-
• #48263
You might be reading square metres as square feet? That house is 6 times bigger than my flat.
-
• #48264
4.5 times bigger than my house

Whoop, spot on, estate agent always use square feet.
-
• #48268
So it's a massive house with funny numbering, but on the other hand it's surrounded by snakes, sharks and poison spiders.

some new house upgrades going in next month: we are getting some joinery done in the bedrooms (cupboards) and living room (cabinets/shelving.) and woah it is v. expensive !

Put our house up for sale last week. Got 25 viewings booked in for this Friday and Saturday. Now need to find somewhere to buy...
-
• #48271
Actually, there was a snake spotted on one of the paths nearby the other day. Spiders are around as well. No sharks at the house though. That I’m aware of.

It's the walking sharks you need to be careful of!

Joinery is insanely expensive. Nice when it's good though.
