  • Comes down to money doesn't it but I think I can tell the difference and the difference might bother me. Can't you sell some bitcoins or something? :P

I'm kinda into the honesty of materials thing so my instinct is to say that if can't afford the fancy thing go for something else instead of a pastiche...

  • The dado rail means you can't properly roller anything below the dado so it's all mini-rollers and brushes, which is well time consuming.

  • wtf is a dado rail

  • A middle class white stick

  • They’re a feature on a wall. Designed to frame your live laugh love tat

  • Yeah I try to stick to that kinda principal too but stray at times... any suggestions for alternatives? Dont think I fancy rubber or cork which I considered at one time.

  • Apparently there to stop commoners from touching and scuffing up your walls / knocking your paintings off their hooks etc.

No defence against grubby toddler paws tho

  • came here to post that!

    Be careful @chrisbmx116

  • Dont worry, not going wood burner.

    Thanks though babes.

  • Are we doing general bathroom rules? If so, don't have your loo and shower located so that the showerhead could accidentally fall in the loo. If they're adjacent it can be prevented with a shower screen, just something to keep in mind. It's to prevent contamination of the drinking water supply, as unlikely as it seems.

  • The tiny particles flood into the room when the burner doors are opened for refuelling, a study found

another 12 took action such as refuelling faster.

quickly opening /closing the door and throwing wood in is likely wafting more particals into the room!

If the flue damper is closed, I open it fully and wait a few seconds to allow the fire box fumes to go up the flue. Then gently crack open the door .
Load up and gently close the doors.

  • Hive mind thoughts please.

We are (fingers crossed) completing next month. We will then be moving into short term accommodation while waiting for a house in the distant provinces to appear. We will be taking a few carloads of stuff to our short term place with the rest going in to storage (long term, not regular access). We are not sure how long it’ll take for a house to come up at the other end. Would you:
    A) Use a London removals firm and have things in storage locally just in case nothing happens and we’re stuck here forever.
    B) Use a destination-based firm and have stuff waiting in storage at the other end.

  • Some firms who do removals also do long term storage that isn't easily accessible but is much cheaper. When we moved out of our flat and stayed with family we had went with Safestore as it was close to where we were staying but it would have been fine and cheaper to go with the suggestion of the removals firm. We didn't end up needing access to our stuff so we didn't need it to be close.

  • Yeah both local and distant removal firms I’ve looked at do the cheapo sealed crate storage thing, I just have a feeling I can’t figure out that going with the removals people at the other end isn’t a good idea, even though it’s cheaper and likely equivalent service.

  • Surely you just get a bigger room and/or bigger house.

  • Yeah they’re fucking awful things but people get really defensive when you try and tell them otherwise. People don’t like being denied their pleasures (SUVs, smoking indoors, flights etc)

  • add Eating meat to that list!

  • Don't smoke indoors, kids.

  • Don't know I'm afraid, I am having the same problem with my theoretical future bathroom.

I wouldn't go cork, we have it in the cellar and it's quite soft so can get damaged easily.

  • How much should it cost to paint the front of a house? A little bit of making good but nothing drastic.

  • I don’t think it will matter where your stuff is if you don’t need access to it. But you will get a better quote if you just use one company to do the initial move, take care of storage, and take it to destination when known.

It is kinda liberating being without your belongings. Enjoy that lightness

  • £2000 probably

  • Mybuilder reckons £800-1200

  • If it's a 2 day job for a couple of decorators with a bit of patching that sounds about right. Depending on location.

For anyone who's embarking on a lot of work the Spon's books can be very useful. Gives pretty accurate estimates of time/materials for jobs and also describes the correct procedure in most cases. I have copies of Finishings and Minor Works, Alterations & Repairs. The estimates check out with 30 years of experience. I use it sometimes if I'm unsure about a price or the length of time something is taking. I've not used them much recently!
