  • And there's the internet, which works better than books for looking stuff up.

Shelves of books are a vanity now, nothing else.

Hence you can buy them by the metre. They're basically home decoration.

  • Especially those dickheads who organise them by colour spine.

  • Old Penguin books are pleasing when arranged together. I was thinking this the other day when I read this article and the WRONG lady said:

Every book is arranged alphabetically by author. “Anyone who arranges their books by colour doesn’t truly care what’s in the books,”

    https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/aug/12/homes-author-hanya-yanagihara-new-york-12000-books

This is WRONG. Did you see how "wrong" was in capitals? That's how strongly I feel. Novels, stack A-Z by author, but what about non-fiction, books on cities, travel books, autobiographies? You can't mix them all up with novels. Madness. You want fiction A-Z by author then a SEPARATE section for travel and non-fiction. Also outsize books need to be together.

  • This is all true.

I have just been to see the house in stabby stabby- indeed, I am still here as I type this. Should the post be truncated you shall all know why.

It's an ok house, a great garden, a dreadful location. Oddly assymetric in terms of bedrooms to living space- you have the sitting room and the kitchen, both of which are small, then five bedrooms.

    Not one for me.

  • At least I could make some money on my old socks.

  • When I was, I dunno, 5 or something I arranged my Ladybird books* by spine colour. Did me NO HARM whatsoever

*That's the original ones, not the irono-versions which it seems to be mandatory for museum / gift shops to stock at the moment

Photograph all your books then get some custom wallpaper made up to order from the pics.
    Then 451.

    way to go.

  • Dewy Decimal, or GTFO.

  • Started packing today, feels good... We'll be in in a fortnight...

  • Good stuff TS

  • Cool - thanks. It would, I think; flow rates of the larger (6-8") in-line extractors are the same or better than many cooker hoods. I did wonder, though: will the grille and surrounding area quickly become disgustingly greasy - hence why hob-sized stainless steel hoods are de rigueur?

  • We're in! Removal company were supposed to come at 2, didn't arrive until half 7! I'm knackered but feeling pretty great about being in my own home!

I'm gonna celebrate by passing out.

  • Congrats!! Looking forward to having the same feeling...

Finally got some dimensions back from the seller, we did get fridge space measurements but they're magically 50mm narrower than they were a week ago... Good thing I didn't buy that fridge that's 15mm too wide for the space...

  • It's funny I never thought I'd get excited about buying a fridge, I'm trying to figure out how to fit a 92cm wide fridge into an 89cm space.

  • Negative shim should do it.

  • That's almost exactly my predicament, space is 900mm (originally told it was 950mm) was about to buy a 915mm fridge...

I haven't bought a new fridge in twenty years, I'm very, very excited...

  • Freeze spray to shrink it, wedge it in with some lard as lube...let it expand.

  • You own the place. Make it work for YOU.

  • Fuck, things move quickly in Australia.

    Spiders, snakes, predatory bogans...

  • Congratulations James !- finally made it then - 7.30 is late in the day to be moving !

(my '2 wheels' held up :)

  • Cheers matey, yeah got sorted but it was a bloody long day! Glad you managed to get home alright, no issues with security on the tube then ;)

  • Anyone know a decent price to replace a felt garage roof? I've been quoted just over a grand, which includes one board which is definitely gone and some extra work installing soffit vents on the house.

  • Who is the forum favourite plumber in south / south west? Need a v simple job doing today or tomorrow. Thanks.

  • Not far off what we paid to re-cover a summer house in new felt - about 200 sq ft. - we also had a small gutter installed on one end. Can dig out details if needed. Drop me a PM.

  • Ok thanks, that's helpful - the garage is ~200 sq ft internally so that plus fitting 20 soffit vents to the house and a bit of gutter/valley maintenance makes me think this is a decent price. Don't worry about digging out the docs if they're buried!
