  • ta - bath is lovely, muchos spendos.

we'd def consider renting there, but i need a garage (pref x2)

  • I live not far from here. Worked in Malmesbury until last week when I moved my office to Chippenham.

Malmesbury is basically dominated by Dyson, pretty quiet place, nice shop down the bottom of the hill, but not exactly a lot going on. I lived in a little village called Sherston, great pub, but probably too far from a station.

Chippenham is a bit of a shit hole, most of the housing is on big estates, and is a bit run down.

Castle Combe is nice to live in, but never has any rental places come up.

  • Oh and I live in a village called Charfield, 10 minutes drive from the M5, so good for commuting. Lots of little villages like that around.

Also the Bath junction to the M4 can be a right pain in the arse at rush hour, so would recommend avoiding that.

  • aces - cheers

  • Having the same issue at mine. Previous owners must have won a competition for 100000 litres of enamel. Only way is with heat. Take your time, it's messy as and also smelly but wow it works

  • I'm giving Peelaway 1 a go. Test patches worked well just a bit messy. Will report back.

  • So we put our house on the market Friday morning (perfect timing) and accepted an offer yesterday for asking price, had a horrible feeling it wouldn't sell due to mass hysteria... phew

    (not London BTW)

  • Probably... only bought it 18 months ago... and made a healthy profit so i'm happy.

    Weirdly only had one viewing.

Used PurpleBricks, would recommend, nice and easy.

  • I viewed a few places in SE1 through Purple Bricks and was overall impressed however the main thing I liked was that I didn't get a hard sell from the people who showed me round. Turned out that neither of the people from purple bricks who did the viewings were actually estate agents.

One of the chaps was a jobbing musician who showed properties for purple bricks in his spare time.

It was a nice contrast to the usual bullshit you get from EAs but perhaps not the best scenario for a seller...

  • Well I showed them around myself, could have paid £150 to have them do it for me, but didn't really see the point, they seemed to like the fact they could ask any question and get the answer from the horses mouth.

Also like the fact everything is done online, from booking viewings to offers. Also means I have a direct relationship with the buyer, in fact we negotiated over text. Hopefully it means as the sale progresses we can directly contact to iron out minor issues.

  • It looks like my buying dream might be moving slightly further away post Brexit... Housing prices might rise... was reading an article from the guardian and have been closely following other bits and bobs from oversea media (I am originally from HK, so still in touch in some ways). Pounds have dropped through the roof as we all know, and now oversea investors see houses in London being a fucking bargain... like their toys are on a mega sale!!!

The guardian says for a 1 milliion house, one could save around 100k... haven't done the maths and don't want to but it makes sense...

    End of 2014 - GBP£1 to around HKD$12
    Pre Brexit - GBP£1 to around HKD$11.5
Now - GBP£1 to around HKD$10.3, it dropped below HKD$10 for a short time yesterday, and it was HKD$10.18 this morning.

Mates who work in banks in HK would used to text me when pounds drop to around GBP£1 - HKD$11, don't know why? Not that I have any HKD to exchange? Now that they won't even bet any eyelid for anything above the HKD$10.5 mark...

I am getting quite depressed now...

  • To buy another house?

  • Spoke to a Chinese fellow today who is very keen to complete a house purchase quickly because of the dip in sterling.

  • I guess it depends on if his funds are in GBP or other currency? Surly the lower the pounds is, the better is it for oversea buyers?

  • Had been umm'ing and ahh'ing over a house near me that looked really well priced.
2 days later, sold STC. Well at least I don't need to worry about it anymore.

Someone persuade me this is actually shit

  • I think we've got bed bugs.

Brand new mattress and brand new bed but im 90% sure we've got bed bugs.

It's an eve mattress with 100 day trial and I'm around 80 days in. Should I send it back and get pest control in? Anyone have any experience with bed bugs?

  • Apols if my memory isn't quite right, but hadn't the vendors left loads of filth in the property when they vacated? Any chance the bugs were already there?

  • France is so cheap! Been really tempted myself but can't justify at the moment as I've not got enough time to actually go there on a regular basis.

    Roll on semi retirement!
