Fair enough.
Just remember that paying rent is just throwing money away and that all your mortgage payments go towards owning your house.Look, I'm not having a go, but you talk as though I'm financially and mathematically illiterate, which I'm not. I'm tired enough of this whole housing fiasco without having to wade through posts accusing me of holding ludicrous opinions on economics that I've never claimed to. I just came here to ask a little advice on buying a little flat.

Just remember that paying rent is just throwing money away and that all your mortgage payments go towards owning your house. This is not true, though most house owners smugly insist on it. If you're thinking of buying a house, by renting you're buying an option to buy one later when conditions and circumstances favour you.
In the meantime you can (generally) buy yourself a higher standard of living than you could if you bought somewhere, and I imagine you could calculate that you'd be better off under a number of circumstances by not buying.

Just need to rant really, but the moral is, always get a full survey !
Came home this mornig after nice swim to 3 men chopping down trees on our land.... anyway, I find out at work, that they have been instructed via the flat below us, who told the adjusters 'over the phone' that they own the trees !
I asked for a copy of the land search.... ooops they didnt do one... just went on the below flat's verbal information !So 2 trees down and 3rd one has been stopped on my instruction until proof of actual ownership is shown !
What idiots cut down trees on a leasehold communual property/area also boardering another property without solictors say so !!!???
Fuckwits ! (this is all to do with subsidence by the way)

I woke up to the local council installing a lockable gate across the only entrance to my property (having not given me keys)...
Still when I got home I took out a spanner and removed the gate which now sits proudly in my back garden...

Does anyone here live in Plaistow? I need some opinions.

Ha I read Plumpstead road on the map and thought it was Norwich for a second!
How long would it take you to get to work from somewhere like that?
-
• #1339
Plaistow and Woolwich are absolute dives IMHO (sorry if I am offending anyone). If I was forced into buying in an area like that I'd move out of London.
Having said that Woolwich is getting the new DLR connection so who knows it might come up a bit. I recently visited friends who moved into the rebranded 'Kidbrooke Village' and it was really nice nothing like it was when I was a kid.

I'm also entering this world of buying somewhere to live in somewhat tentatively. I have a deposit, and am now looking at mortgages which I know very little about.
There's almost too much information about online, and it's hard to get advice from a bank without them trying to hard sell me a mortgage. Oh well, booked appointments with about half a dozen banks/building societies.
What's clapton like these days?

It's roughly 12 miles from work, so a decent commute.

Just keep reading and absorbing stuff. Over the last few months I've been on a few pointless viewings, had a few pointless chats with lenders, etc, which have all helped me realise what I want a bit clearer. Still haven't got any nearer to buying in practical terms, but at least I'm a bit more aware of what I need to be doing. Just don't rush.

Yeah, that's the plan.
I'm speaking to everyone I know who's done the same thing recently and booking appts with every bank.
I'm not going to rush it, but it's something I plan on getting done in the next few months.

Same plan here. Need to leave my rental in October. Would be great if I didn't have to rent again. We'll see.

Quite, our lease is up in tow months, speaking to our landlord about just rolling with a months notice from then.

Where do you work (area) ?

Victoria. So I can live anywhere within ~15 miles of there.

Anywhere ? Then why go for Woolwich ? What area do you live in now ?
What sort of area do you want ? Make a list of what you do and dont want .

What price range you looking at, and how many bedrooms do you want ? Do you need to be close to public transport ? Do you want to rent a room out ?

I'm looking at areas like that as my money will go further. In an ideal world I'd have a garage, garden/balcony and two bedrooms so I can have a lodger. But my budget doesn't stretch to ideal... My options are wide open and I'm considering lots of different possibilities.
Aye. Overtime they do. Especially in London. Like the stock market
