  • Democracy doesn't move at the same pace as Big Brother or X-Factor.

  • yes it does with direct action, as democracy is when when those impacted by governance have a voice and are represented by governance. the case of climbing on the roof of parliment is probably the best case of democracy this year.

  • Yeah. We are all well and truly fucked

    99% of species that have ever lived are now exctinct. It's just a matter of time for us. My money is on a completely unstoppable virulant pandemic.

    Human excinction FTW!

  • If you've read Star Maker you'll know that Earth's dominant species are due a few more mass extinctions before social utopia is realistic. Relatively speaking, we're still savages.

  • Moon: cloning is the answer!

  • I think as a species we're a bit fucking self-important.

    Lucky break we got ending up here. Make the most of it, Earthings.

  • The single most effective thing a human can do to prevent the acceleration of climate change is to remove their own consumption of the planet's resources.

    Walking into the sea and drowning would probably work best.

  • Bit cold this time of year, RPM.

  • Head in the oven?
    Oh sorry, that may use up the gas.

  • Same concept, different scale.

  • That they think they should have the right to circumvent the legislative process and impede the passage of people acting in a lawful manner*.

    *This is in reference to the blocking of runways, not sitting on roofs.

  • She was fighting for rights in-law to free one half of Humanity from rank subjugation.

    The Democratic and Technological fight is already underway to mitigate and curb the worst excesses of climate change.
    I have faith in Humanity and Technology.
    I don't believe the actions of runway-blocking Neo-Luddites are very productive.

    However if it weren't for people like them, then we (humankind) would be doing less, possibly nothing.

  • However if it weren't for people like them, then we (humankind) would be doing less, possibly nothing.

    I don't believe that those people, sitting on that roof are advancing the argument at all.

  • @ Winston - agreed. I also think that in 20-30 years time, these protestors (and similar direct action protestors Plane Stupid) will be hailed as heroes in the same way the Suffragettes were

  • First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
    Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist;
    Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
    Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
    Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.

    Pastor Martin Niemoller (1892–1984)

    Doing nothing is not an option, at least you're all talking about it which is what the protesters want you to do, nows the time for action..............before its to late or is it already?

  • Yes it has.

    shit man, so if all the scientists in the world killed theemselves we'd be better off? there are many things people can do to prevent the acceleration of climate change that are more effective thendeath, e.g. research, raising awareness, campaigning, inventing.

  • It's a fucking fiasco.
    Back to square one - viral pandemic ftw.

  • if it is that easy i wish al quaeda would get up there with some explosives

    and sort out the expenses row once and for all !!

  • True.

    Do pipe down, you incredibly boring person.

  • Untrue*

    *So far

  • by riding our bikes rather than travelling in a car or bus etc i believe we are doing our bit to reduce consumption and therefore pollution. it is also a good laugh.

    i think keeping climate change on the agenda is very important. and i think the hope of change is sometimes the thing that keeps me going / feeling positive. i say again well done to the protesters.

    just like the house of commons is a target for greenpeace so will nuclear power stations be a target for terrorists. imagine the damage if they blew up a nuclear power station. i heard that to fire up our current consumption it will require a nuclear power station in every town. imagine trying to defend that / keep it safe.

    and all the nuclear waste. i heard that the mafia got hold of a waste contract and sank three boats rather than pay for the waste to be treated / recylced / stored properly.

    i am not convinced that a dash for nuclear is a particularly good idea.

  • in a proper country those eco-commies would have been shot before they got to the roof.

    You really are a dickhead aren't you?
